Google Play “Package is invalid” issue resolved – Are you still running into the error?

by: Adam KoueiderAugust 15, 2013

A day after acknowledging the “Package file is invalid” error and putting up a page for the issue to help keep us updated, Google has already fixed the issue.

Google changed the status of the issue to “resolved”, after a week of updating issues on the Play Store. The error was appearing sporadically for pretty much all users when updating applications, and it’s great to see that Google has quickly resolved the issue.

Are you still running into “Package file is invalid” errors? Let us know in the comments.

  • Kiran R Sekhar

yes. today few hours before i got the error with my nexus 7 (updated to 4.3) while downloading an app. when i downloaded it again it came properly.

  • shojus

Same errors…? 403, 497 and you name it! Sucks but I am patient. :)

  • David Camp

So that’s why I’ve been having trouble updating apps. I’ve a rooted HTC One running custom Rom, thought it was that, glad to hear it’s not.

    • dogulas

Same with me. Apps aren’t updating and new ones I’m telling Google to install (from a desktop browser Google Play) aren’t being pushed to my phone.

  • MasterMuffin

don’t know about Google Play errors, but this is what I see when I click the link from your Google + page o.O

    • Adam Koueider

WOW! Back to 1980’s web design I see.. In all seriousness I don’t know what’s going on, works fine on my end. Could be a cache you are seeing, try hard refreshing it.

      • MasterMuffin

        Yup worked, silly me :D

  • Gamul

I never got this error from Google Play. However, I was getting it all the time from Amazon’s AppStore, and Amazon support was not able to resolve it. I finally found a web site that talked about the issue and a setting that could be changed ot avoid it. But again, never say it with Google Play.

  • mass

When I connect through Hotspot sheild it work fine and install and update works ….. I think its CSC problem

  • komet

Got this error all the time on both tablet and phone, very annoying to find a bajillion notfications like that whenever it screwed up. Hope it’s really fixed.

  • dogulas

What I am experiencing is apps not automatically installing on my phone when I say to install them from Google Play in the browser on my computer. It’s not pushing the update to my phone.

  • NexusKoolaid

Encountered the error late last night when attempting to update LightFlow. Issue not resolved.

  • Andrian Hendrawan

i still have an issue, i often get double app update notifications the next day after i updated an app. it asks me again to update but i already updated it.

  • pritish

Found the issue while updating antutu benchmark. Initially it was (due to the issue) downloaded4-5 times. Then I recieved “package file invalid” message.

  • William Worlde

Not anymore. And I’ve also noticed I’ve gotten the new Google Play app. Nice to see my recently updated Gapps.

I am getting a double “apps_list” popup when I open your site though. Huh?

    • Vardan Nazaretyan

The same thing here. What’s that app_list?

      • Adam Koueider

I’m not sure guys I’m getting it too. I’ll let the people in charge know. probably some extra lines of code that weren’t deleted.

        • Vardan Nazaretyan

Thanks for the quick response! I don’t have it anymore.

    • Adam Koueider

Notified the guys in charge, they’re working on it.

  • Hii8

  • Illmatched

The only time this happens to me is when my Xoom (running Team EOS Jellybean 4.2.2) is overclocked at 1704Mhz – if I step it down to 1600Mhz I have no problems

  • Shahzad Malik

This is resolved for me but, I am still having google now issues when I click on my card via the widget, it opens the google now app and all the cards are gone… I click refresh and still no cards.. Then they will come back after some time via the widget and then when I click the widget the cycle continues…. I noticed people on Google plus were experiencing this problem… Hope google acknowledges this problem.

EVERY update attempted says ‘cannot be downloaded due to an error’!

  • Darryl Johnson

Resolved by creating a new Gmail account… added it to my Play Store account. I never received a text on my phone with a verification code for my previous Gmail account so I found this the easiest way to get around the error.

  • Leroy Bagwell

I was having this problem for a while, then found a solution that actually worked on some forum (sorry i can’t remember which one, if I find it i’ll post it here).

Anyway, you need to go onto Google Play via a browser, click the cog button (settings) and select ‘Android Device Manager’. then click the pencil icon (rename this device) and type a new name for your device (or just slightly alter it – the main thing is to change it to something else). Come out of this and try to download again, and if you’re lucky it will solve the problem.

  • jeewantha
