According to Reuters, Panasonic are set to launch a range of Android based smartphones in 2011. These will become available in Japan, before being rolled out to the rest of the world in 2012. This is a very modest schedule and seems feasible. Panasonic are not new to smartphones, but they have been cautious about jumping on the Android band-wagon, that is for sure.
It is refreshing to see an executive admit that his company is slow to pick up on a market trend. Indeed, this is what head of Panasonic’s mobile division, Osamu Waki, had to say. “(We) misjudged the speed at which smartphones would be taken up in the Japanese market,” and that “with the rapid shift to Android, we want to catch up quickly.”
