OnePlus finally details its Smash campaign, puts a poor Samsung phone to death

April 25, 2014

Although it’s a little late for some poor smartphones, OnePlus has finally detailed the entry requirements for its β€œSmash the Past” contest. If you’ve missed the buildup, 100 lucky winners who come up with the most fiendish ways to destroy their smartphone will be the first members of the public offered the choice to purchase an OnePlus One for just $1.

To celebrate the start of its launch campaign, OnePlus has also put together a promotional video which claims the campaign’s first official victim. Samsung owners are encouraged to look away.

If you can’t wait to get your hands on the One, put down the sledgehammer and follow OnePlus’ three simple steps:

  1. Apply – Fill out the application form and send it in.
  2. Stand Out – They will choose the 100 best applicants to smash their phones, so wait for your email before destroying anything!
  3. Smash & Share – Share a video of your smash on YouTube and the OnePlus One will be yours.

The chosen 100Β who follow through on their pledge will each receive a 16GB Silk White OnePlus One, as well as three more invites to dish out to their pals.

Will you be applying for an OnePlus One, or will you make a stand against smartphone violence?

I have a few old phones (some Nokias and Galaxy S3). I guess I have to break the S3, because, as I said, the others are Nokias :D

    • Guest123

There are only a few phones listed as “smashable.” Not sure if the S3 is on the list, mostly newer phones. My LG Optimus G Pro isn’t even listed.

So, you have to smash a recent flagship, essentially.

I think the oldest device I seen listed was the Note 2.

      • Chris

        S3 is on the list

        • MasterMuffin

          Guud :)

        • Guest123

Looks like they go further back for Samsung devices than anyone else. LG is on the current generation only, HTC goes back to the M7.

    • sam

I don’t care for chines phone Samsung is around for a very long time now stick with what I know I own a note 2 and its great I don’t see nothing out there to replace my note 2

      • kt

        Note 3 ;)

      • Guest

        nice name. fanboy!

    • mobilemann

      applied for the same thing:D

  • Adrian Ioanci

I like the One Plus but, i’m not sure it’s worth to smash my Nexus 5 for it :)

    • Bruce

Do some mad CGI and not actually smash it?

    • Fred Chiang

buy a used galaxy s3 ($200) and smash it. ^_^

  • Chicken Luvva

why would you destroy a perfectly good phone you would have to be a moron to do this.

    • Fred Chiang

… because a used samsung galaxy s3 is $200 on craigslist and you can get a free $300 phone

  • Ruben

    You could smash a dummy

  • George Av

pfft i’m not even gonna bother for a 16GB phone.. I mean, why the hell is that even a option now? minimum should be 32GB and the highest storage option should be 128GB…

  • Luka Mlinar

I really liked the “10 things you can do with your old Android phone” article. I think everyone who’s thinking of smashing their phone should read that first.

  • LaurenΘ›iu Selei

Samsung features sell phones, I would like my Nexus 5 to have some Samsung/HTC features

  • Leandro Rempel

I would love to get my hands on the OnePlus One, and I could smash my Galaxy S3 that I am currently using, but the only phone I’m ready to smash up is my BlackBerry Curve 9360. I don’t see anything wise or smart about smashing up a 300 to 600 dollar smartphone. But I sure wish I could get an invite to buy the phone later. 350 bucks for the 64 GB Version is a killer deal!

  • Daniel D

I think I will keep my s3 for another year. It’s still a perfect phone.

  • https://plus.google.com/+TroyLeonard Troy Leonard

I have an already broken s3 so sign me up

  • Corey Watford

Funny that they dont allow you to smash my Oppo phone lol

  • tech4life

    My country isn’t even listed…

  • godammit

    no Australia? Fuck you One+

I wish they’d cut the BS and just start selling them. They’ve run their hype machine very well, now they should put their efforts into keeping up with demand instead of trying to throttle it.

  • SuperMike

smash campaign is dumb and insulting… I will not betray my old galaxy s3 that served me well for couple of years.. +1 will be just another old phone in 6-8 months, I’m not destroying perfectly good phones, killing hampsters or exposing myself to minors for a chance to get a white phablet with 12 GB of available memory ..screw +1, not interested.

  • jclgan

It’s an utterly stupid, short-sighted, arrogant, and thoughtless marketing campaign. You guys already just posted an article detailing 10 non-destructive ways you could repurpose an old smartphone, ultimately keeping it out of the landfill and possibly improving the life of someone less fortunate who can’t afford a high-end device.

Perhaps if the phone were non- or barely-functional, like my 4 year-old Nokia N95 or 6 year-old Motorola RAZR, perhaps that’s okay (as long as that pressurized battery is taken out!). But a fully-functional device that’s barely 2 years old can easily be sold on the marketplace for almost as much as what a 16GB One would cost.

I have half a mind to utterly write off OnePlus from my list of potential phone manufacturers to watch because of this kind of attitude. Even though they are putting out a great product and seem really committed to doing a good job. This is hubris that I cannot endorse, however. It’s not the scale of destruction that bothers me (100 phones) so much as the mindset driving it.

    hahahaha..original marketing campaign.

  • Otto Andersson

So many comments of people defending their phone and calling this stupid. If a company could get away with killing your offspring for 350 bucks, they wouldn’t even hesitate.

  • dontgotnothingonthis

Haha I just realized I was the one they were getting to bad I got them its just better to not try and hurt someone cause they are in the wrong but hey I would love to go at it again great game.

With the performance aspect, the above average camera quality, and Cyanogen in its corner, the price you pay for such a powerful package seems way too good to be true. And if you have decided to become a proud owner of this device, perhaps you’re in the market for a solid and beautiful protection case as well.
