HTC One X: Mod for disabling the in-app 3-dot Menu Bar or remap it to Recent Apps

The Ice Cream Sandwich update, known for its speed, performance, and stability, has satisfied many Android users. One of the most notable features of Ice Cream Sandwich was the virtual on-screen buttons that replaced the physical buttons. But, not all users were happy with the idea of the virtual on-screen buttons that consisted of the Back, Home, and Recent Apps button.

Just recently, the Menu button that was primarily used in bringing up the options in apps was removed and instead it only appears whenever an app is needed. This made many users furious, as the 3-Dot Menu takes away precious screen space in most cases.

Luckily for us, XDA Developers members blubbers and endursa have found a nifty little hack for HTC One X users to remove the irritating 3-dot menu. The hack works for stock and custom ROM users. Check out the guide below to know more about installing it on your HTC One X.

Requirements

  • Rooted HTC One X with ClockworkMod Recovery installed
    • Stock ROM users – make sure you have build number 1.29.401.11 and that your ROM is odexed
    • Custom ROM users – make sure you have build number 1.26.x / 1.28.x / 1.29.x and that your ROM is deodexed

  • Fully charged battery or at least 70% battery left.
  • Backup all personal data on your phone to make sure you have a copy of your personal data (e.g., contacts, SMS, MMS, Internet settings, Wi-Fi passwords, and the like) in case the procedure in this guide erases such data.

Instructions

For Custom ROM Users

  1. Download the AROMA 3-Dot Remover package (aroma_3dot-remover-v1.2.1.zip, 3.16 MB).
  2. Copy the downloaded ZIP file to the root of your phone’s SD card.
  3. Switch off your HTC One X.
  4. Boot into ClockworkMod Recovery. You can do this by pressing and holding down the Volume Down button and the Power key.  At the HBOOT screen, select Recovery using the Power button and use the Volume buttons to navigate through recovery.
  5. Inside recovery, select Install ZIP from SD Card.
  6. Select Choose ZIP from SD Card. Browse for the AROMA 3-Dot Remover ZIP package and select it. Confirm the installation by selecting Yes on the screen that follows. 
  7. After a while, the AROMA installer will show up. Follow the onscreen instructions to begin installing the hack. Head back to the main recovery menu after it has finished installing.
  8. Select Reboot System Now to reboot your phone.

For Stock ROM Users

  1. Download the stock Menu Bar package (ODEXED_1.29.401.11_menubarmod_stock.zip, 304.3 kB) and save it to your computer.  You will keep this file as a backup, in case you need to revert to stock behavior and remove the modifications.  The procedure for reverting to the stock Menu Bar is the same as flashing the mod as described from step 3 onward.
  2. Download one of the two available remover packages below. Each package is different, so whatever option you choose will greatly affect how your buttons behave.
    • MenuBarMod_lphome – long-pressing the Home button will act as a Menu button. (ODEXED_1.29.401.11_menubarmod_lphome-menu.zip, 299.4 kB)
    • MenuBarMod_recent_menu – use the Recent Apps button as Menu button. (ODEXED_1.29.401.11_menubarmod_recent_menu.zip, 299.4 kB)
  3. Copy the downloaded ZIP file to your phone’s SD card.
  4. Switch off your HTC One X.
  5. Boot into ClockworkMod Recovery. You can do this by pressing and holding down the Volume Down button and the Power key.  At the HBOOT menu, select Recovery using the Power button and use the Volume buttons to navigate through recovery.
  6. Inside Recovery, Select Install ZIP from SD Card.
  7. Select Choose ZIP from SD Card. Browse for the downloaded remover ZIP package and select it. Confirm the installation by selecting Yes on the screen that follows.
  8. Head back to the main recovery menu.
  9. Select Reboot System Now to reboot your phone.

Congratulations! You have successfully removed the 3-dot menu button on your HTC One X.
