Nova Launcher updated, brings “Ok Google” hotword support

The latest version of Nova Launcher has arrived to Google Play bringing with it a few new improvements, chief among them is added support for the “Ok, Google” hotword.

Basically with the new “Ok, Google” hotword you’ll be able to launch Google Search from anywhere within the Nova homescreen. This works pretty much the same way as the Google Experience Launcher, but it’s a welcome addition for those that want hotword support but are also allured by some of Nova’s other features.

As you might guess, the Ok Google support won’t work with every device. You’ll need Android 4.1 or higher and a phone that supports low-power active listening. If you have a newer mid-range or high-end device, you probably won’t run into any problems here.

Wondering what else is new, aside from “Ok, Google” hotwording support? Here’s the full change-log:

  • Ok, Google – Use Google’s voice hotword from within Nova Launcher. Requires Jellybean and a device/locale Google supports for hotword.
  • Subgrid positioning – More flexible layouts by snapping items halfway through the grid
  • Dynamica Calendar Icons – Supports Today Calendar’s Dynamic Calendar Icon, also supported by some icon themes such as Domo or KEX
  • Color options – icon labels, tabs, backgrounds

To grab the latest Nova Launcher update, you’ll want to head over to Google Play. As always, using the app is free, although there is $4 premium version with a few extra features.

As a raving fan of Nova Launcher I support this decision! Please excuse me as I download this with much haste.

It works but its not 100% yet…rebooting to see if that helps (Galaxy S4 on 4.3 and Galaxy Note on 4.1.2)

Wow! This has not been updated in months, and I am glad to see that awesome new features are being brought in this update. Nova Launcher FTW!!

    • Keg Man

it was updated with new features only a week or two ago

Really? Oh.. I should edit that out, but I won’t. I swear the last update was in December. Oh well, I guess I am wrong. Thanks for clarifying.

Actaually, this is the first non-beta update in awhile. The last several updates were all opt-in beta updates.

nope you are not the only one. The last update was so long ago that I cant remember.
But this is an awesome addition to Nova for sure :)

its been a long time since i’ve used Nova, im on a Nexus 5, has anyone had worse battery with it?

  • Keg Man

it was my understanding that only the moto X will not drain your battery with active listening

    • Jon Johnson

That’s due to the Moto X having an entire core (low powered) to active listening. Other devices have to use what they have which puts additional stress on the device.

    This update is great!

Anybody figure out how to put this widget on the lockscreen to have touchless control???

  • gmich

I updated on my LG G2 and rebooted but the hotword feature still doesn’t work. Any ideas? I’d really like to get this working to make it more like the Moto X in the car.

No “OK Google” support for my Galaxy S5 because I’m outside US/UK… Don’t understand why, everyone in Denmark understands/speaks english…

Used it on my Nexus 5. Works fairly well from homescreen. However It activates even when the phone is sleep mode, but it just leaves a “google search” notification for me and when i click on it, it seems to crash Nova and reset my home screen momentarily.

love Nova but on initial boot up it is really slow and takes ages to load widgets hope this addresses some of those issues.
