This guy says his Note 7 destroyed his Jeep

Samsung’s massive recall of the Galaxy Note 7 has been making headlines all week, but so far we haven’t seen anything quite this dramatic. A Florida man says that his Note 7 ignited while charging in the center console of his Jeep Grand Cherokee, and that the vehicle was thoroughly destroyed in the ensuing fire.

Nathan Dornacher had only had his new smartphone for four days. He says he was unaware of the recall.

Fortunately, nobody was in the vehicle when the device allegedly exploded. Dornacher, his wife, their 8-year-old daughter, and the family dog had driven to a Labor Day yard sale on Monday morning. The smartphone in question was left on the charger while Dornacher and his wife unloaded a desk from the back of the vehicle. After spending a few minutes inside the house, Dornacher told his daughter to head back to the Jeep… only to look out the window and see that it was engulfed in flames.

Although insurance is paying for the totaled vehicle, Dornacher says he’s still out thousands of dollars for modifications he made to the Jeep.

Previously an iPhone fan, Dornacher swapped to Samsung once he first became aware of the Note line. He says he’s traded in for a new Note annually for the past several years, but after this incident, he doesn’t want another Samsung product in his house ever again.

Samsung has released the following statement in regards to the incident:

We are aware of the incident and we are working with Mr. Dornacher to investigate his case and ensure we do everything we can for him. Consumer safety is Samsung’s highest priority. With regard to the Galaxy Note 7, we are asking owners to take advantage of the Product Exchange Program announced on Friday of last week. The program offers Note 7 owners the opportunity to exchange the phone for a new one.

It’s still not confirmed whether the new smartphone was truly at the epicenter of this vehicular catastrophe, but it’s definitely giving more than a few Note 7 owners some pause. But what are your thoughts? Give us your take on the situation in the comments below!
