You would have hoped that they would be upgraded to the next version of Android, given that they are all 2017 smartphones, but if there were any doubts, HMD Global has now put them to rest: the Nokia 3, 5 and 6 will all receive the final version of Android O.

A spokesperson for HMD Global, which currently has the rights to sell phones under the Nokia brand, told TechRadar, “The smartphones will get the Android O update once the new release is available from Google for their OEM partners, the same way HMD Global is committed to the monthly Android security updates.”

Android O is the current codename for the next major Android software update. It’s currently in the development stages, but it’s expected to be released in the final form in Q3 2017 (possible with the title Android Oreo).

As with any new software update, Android owners are of course keen to know if their phones will receive it. As a basic guide, if your phone launched with Android 5.0 Lollipop or earlier it probably won’t, and if it launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow or later probably will.

The Nokia 6 was HMD’s first phone, launched in January, followed swiftly by the Nokia 3 in February. The Nokia 5, meanwhile, is expected to land this month running Android Nougat, the same as the 6 and 3. See our initial thoughts on all of these phones here.
