nexus 5 official

The Nexus 5 just launched, bringing months of speculation to an end, and moving the spotlight onto a new set of questions: when, where, and for how much will we be able to buy it?

We’ve already had a close look at the specifications and features of the Nexus 5, and my colleague Chris Smith will soon be giving you the rundown on the new features in Android 4.4 KitKat.

If you already made up your mind on buying the Nexus 5, here’s what we know about its price, versions, availability, and release date.

Nexus 5 prices and availability

As usual, the new Nexus 5 is now available in Google’s Play Store. The device is now selling in 16GB and 32GB versions, in black and white. Here are the Nexus 5 prices:

Official info:

Nexus 5 is available today, unlocked and without a contract, on Google Play in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan and Korea (and coming soon to India), starting at $349. Just in the time for the holidays, Nexus 5 will be available soon at the following retailers: Sprint, T-Mobile, Amazon, Best Buy and RadioShack.

If what happened last year is any indication on the public’s interest in the Nexus 5, the first batch of devices will sell out very fast. Stay tuned for more information on the precise time when the Nexus 5 will go on sale.

The Nexus 5 will be available on Sprint starting with November 8, going for $149 for the 16GB version, after a $50 rebate.

T-Mobile only confirmed that it will be carrying the Nexus 5 “in the coming weeks” without giving any info on its price and release date.

Google and LG were harshly criticized for the botched release of the Nexus 4 last year, when they grossly underestimated the demand for the handset. There are some signs that the two companies are better prepared now, with leaks showing thousands of devices in the inventories of retailers and LG’s national units. The Nexus is also going to be released internationally with a smaller delay this year, both in Google’s Play Store and through LG.

Stay tuned for more.

Update: For a brief while, the white Nexus 5 16GB model was listed as sold out. It has been made available for sale again, but all versions of the Nexus 5 have had their dates pushed back to November 8th. This suggests that the first shipment of Nexus 5 units have already been sold out. In other words, you might want to move quickly if you don’t want to see your device’s shipping date pushed back dramatically.

Show Press Release

Android for all and the new Nexus 5

Just in time for Halloween, we have two new treats for Android fans. First, we’re excited to unwrap our latest platform release, KitKat, which delivers a smarter, more immersive Android experience to even more people. And second, we’re introducing Nexus 5-a new Nexus phone developed with LG.

The first thing you’ll notice about KitKat is we’ve made the experience much more engaging: the book you’re reading, the game you’re playing, or the movie you’re watching-now all of these take center stage with the new immersive mode, which automatically hides everything except what you really want to see.

Bringing more Google smarts to Android

Behind the polish on the screen is the power under the hood. Take the Phone app, which for most people hasn’t really changed since the days of flip phones. Now, we’re making calling easier than ever, by helping you search across your contacts, nearby places, or even Google Apps accounts (like your company’s directory), directly from within the app. And with the new Hangouts app, all of your SMS and MMS messages are together in the same place, alongside your other conversations and video calls, so you’ll never miss a message no matter how your friends send it. This is just a small taste of KitKat-learn more on our site.

Google has always focused on helping users get immediate access to the information they need, and we want to bring this same convenience and power to users on Android. With the new Nexus 5 launcher, Google smarts are deeply integrated into the phone you carry around with you, so getting to the information you need is simple, easy and fast. Swipe once from the home screen to get Google Now literally at your fingertips. Put Google to work for you by saying “OK, Google” to launch voice search, send a text, get directions or even play a song you want to hear. And in the coming weeks, we’re enhancing Now with important new card types that bring you information about contextual topics that interest you such as updates from a favorite website or blog.

Reaching the next 1 billion users

Building a platform that makes mobile phones accessible for everyone has always been at the heart of Android. Until now, some lower-end Android phones couldn’t benefit from more recent Android releases due to memory constraints. With KitKat, we’ve slimmed down Android’s memory footprint by doing things like removing unnecessary background services and reducing the memory consumption of features that you use all the time. We did this not only within Android but across Google services like Chrome and YouTube. RAM (or memory) is one of the most expensive parts of a phone, and now Android can run comfortably on the 512MB of RAM devices that are popular in much of the world, bringing the latest goodies in Android 4.4 within reach for the next billion smartphone users.

Introducing Nexus 5

Along with our sweet naming tradition, we also introduce a new device with each platform release to showcase the latest Android innovations. For KitKat, we partnered with LG to develop Nexus 5 — the slimmest and fastest Nexus phone ever made. Its design is simple and refined to showcase the 5″ Full HD display. Nexus 5 also keeps you connected at blazing speeds with 4G/LTE and ultra fast wifi. The advanced new lens on Nexus 5 captures more light for brighter night and sharper action shots. And with optical image stabilization, you no longer have to worry about shaky hands and blurry pictures. A new HDR+ mode automatically snaps a rapid burst of photos and combines them to give you the best possible single shot. Learn more on our site.

Android 4.4, KitKat, which comes on Nexus 5, will also soon be available on Nexus 4, 7, 10, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play edition devices in the coming weeks.

How’s that for a treat?

  • trwb

    • Cloduar

Same here from the French Play Store. I only wish the covers were available as well… Those flip ones seem to be nice.

      • trwb

Yea I tried to get a cover too but not available

  • Vitor Rodrigues

No luck in getting Nexus 5 in Portugal with Google Play (again) :(

P.S. US$ 349 = 256.27 Euros. JESUS!!! If the price was this in Europe, LG would be out of stock in minutes..sorry seconds…

    • Luka

So true. But that’s not gonna happen

    • Mr T

Taxes my friend. N5 32gb is listed at 399$ on Google Play. Just ordered one and with shipping and taxes (15%) the final bill ammounts to 475$. So yeah if I calculate it in euros it’s still pretty good (339euros) but not as sweet as it would seem at first glance.

    • Lucian

I know I would buy it for 256€, even with 2 year contract for that price.

  • mynameissilly

Does it work on AT&T? Does anyone have a source on that?

    • jp

Yes it does. You just get the Sim card and slide it in and your good to go.

  • Robbie Irvine

No 32Gb in the UK :(

    • Robbie Irvine

and now there 40 miniutes after I first check – shakes fist @ google play store

  • ash

  • Scott Galbraith

  • Luka

Is 350$ = 350€ in Germany or/and Italy? Can’t access the store from Croatia

    • thatgermanguy

jip right, just ordered it – germany

  • John Locke

16GB is £299 and 32GB is £339 for the UK.

    • John Locke

I wonder why this comment got 2 downvotes :”((

      • adam evans

Because their screwing us in the UK over on price !

        • John Locke

I know who down voted me and it has nothing to do with Android!

And yeah, I wish it cost the same as the Nexus 4 at launch…

          • Kassim

It’s time people stopped banging their heads against a wall and stop lamenting these price discrepencies between different regions – they have existed for a long time and will continue to do so. Make your peace with it.

In light of this fact of life, why not compare it to our own prices – costing just £20 more than the equivalent model from last year (with better hardware within it), is hardly tantamount to daylight robbery.

Plus, as far as I’m concerned, a less than £350 launch price for a phone that matches the
hardware of £500-550+ flagships from other companies looks like a flipping bargain to me.

But, I may be wrong of course…

        • MadCowOnAStick

          they’re*

  • John Garlits

Halloween, KitKat candy, yup I called it!

  • Ishaan Malhotra

So when will we get kitkat for nex7 2013?

  • Jonathan Sosa

    Finally its here….

  • aaronZona

I called Big Red to ask if they would be carrying the Nexus 5, they said ‘not at this time.’ Not sure what that means, my guess is nope. The rep I talked to looked into the devices that are upcoming in November and did say that a WHITE LG G2 is on its way? Also a Galaxy Mini? Just a heads up.

  • Groud Frank

Can’t access the site from my country(Trinidad and Tobago) so I assume most if the Caribbean cannot either. We cannot buy any devices in the play store from the inception. I bet if it was about bombarding us with ads Google would find a way to make sure they touch every corner of the globe.

    • Kendall

You will unfortunately have to wait until it’s available on Amazon or else have someone in the USA purchase it for you if that’s an option.

  • http://www.tarasmuz.ru/ Taras Lanchev

I wanted to order it from Google Play in UK, but as soon as I entered my details and pressed the button I was redirected to the page saying “Order not complete. Wait 15 minutes”. Pretty sure it was more than 15 minutes already, but the page is still there and a the cancelation button doesn’t work. Any suggestions?

    • Zeshan Ahmed

You have to refresh the page – F5..

  • mrdidit

Just bought one in the UK. There isn’t black in stock but white. Shipping time 1-3 day yeeeey!

    • http://www.tarasmuz.ru/ Taras Lanchev

Got white as well! Giving you a virtual high five :)

  • Tran Nguyen

    V.. E.. R.. I.. Z.. O.. N… You are suck!

  • Heitor Boa Morte

I’m so sad because I live in Brazil and the Google Play Store doesn’t sell devices, just apps, ebooks and musics =(
And when Nexus 5 get here, the price will be the double pratictced in USA.

  • Edwin Walker

    $349 £79 markup
    $399 £89 markup

Why is everything more expensive in the UK?

    • adam evans

I agree makes no sense!! I was expecting a small markup at around £250. What the hell Google !!

    • Lucian

In my country Nexus 4 16GB is 399€ (341£) with 2 year contract. Yes, you read right, with 2 year contract. I don’t even dare to think about Nexus 5 price…

    • PHug

Your cell service is cheaper, you win

      • adam evans

it is alot cheaper :) does the $349 price include tax?

        • MadCowOnAStick

          yeah, it became like $380

      • Lucian

I’ll give you an example of what kind of service we have in Slovenia. If I would cough out 74€ per month I would get 2000 minutes and 2000 SMS, 5GB monthly 3G transfer and I would still have to give 209€ for Nexus 4 16GB. Total worth 1985€.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I was browsing on t-mobile website and if I saw correct you can get Nexus 4 with unlimited plan for 63€ per month and all you have to pay upfront is 20€. Total worth 1532€.

And you can use unlimited plan on t-mobile in more than 100 countries while we can only use our plans in our small country. If we go over border to Croatia, Italy etc. everything is really expensive, especially mobile data.

  • Luka Mlinar

AA did a half assed job here. Where are the prices in €. People had to look up the comment to check the price in pounds.

  • Zeshan Ahmed
