plex for android

The developers behind the popular cross platform media app Plex have announced a ground up redesign of their Android app.

In an interesting blog post that sheds some light on the process of creating an application for Android and other platforms, the Plex team explains why it decided to scrap the previous version of the app, and build a new version from scratch. The new Plex for Android will run on Android 3.2+ devices (to maintain Google TV compatibility) and should become available in the Play Store sometimes this week.

The new Plex complies with the Holo design guidelines for Android, and, judging from the promo video that the developers released, it looks awesome.

The first users who will get to try the new app will be those who signed up for the premium service offered by the team, PlexPass. After the app emerges from beta, all current users will receive it as a free update. New users will get to purchase it from the Play Store for the regular price of $4.99.

Along with the modern look, the revamped app also comes with infinite scrolling through lists, a brand new music playback interface, and the ability to act as a media server. In other words, users will be able to play media from a smartphone or tablet running Plex on other mobile devices. Up until now, the Plex for Android app only allowed users to connect to a media server running on a PC or Mac.
