New HTC Android phone to be better than the Palm Pre?

HTC logoTelstra executives quoted by SmartHouse.com.au, the next Android powered smartphone from HTC will be even better than the Palm Pre, which those executives were briefed on at the 2009 CES show in Las Vegas.

SmartHouse attributes the following quote to the Telstra folks:

We have seen both and we believe that the new HTC phone will be a real competitor to the iPhone and the Pre which at this stage looks nice but is still not delivered to market

SmartHouse also says that the execs said that the HTC device was “better and more functional” than the Palm Pre.

While at CES we asked HTC about its plans for the next Android phone, but the company, unsurprisingly, declined to comment.  We expect to see an official announcement from HTC during next month’s Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona, which we will be attending.

Having spent about an hour with the Palm Pre personally, I can say that HTC will have to do a great deal of customization in order to out-do the Pre and its webOS, which were nothing short of spectacular in the demos I saw.
