Cnet is reporting that it believes that multi-touch support will come with the Eclair (2.0) update for Android, and not in Donut (1/6).  As for devices, Cnet also mentions that they believe the upcoming Motorola Sholes for Verizon will be the first phone to come with the Eclair update, and that it will make its debut on October 6 at the MotoDev event in San Diego.

For those of you who have hacked multi-touch support onto your G1′s, how significant would this inclusion be?  Is multi-touch as essential as it’s been made out to be?  It is already available in HTC’s Hero, which is on sale in Europe right now.

To me, multi-touch is not something that I care about. That said, if Android is to take over the world and convert over the iPhone masses, it’s very important.

agreed…multitouch is one of those things that isn’t used frequently, its very handy and become a must-have if you wanna beat the iphone…. what’s important is phone as modem… am on the go most of the time… and i need this modem capability so i can use my laptop… and bluetooth for data/file transfer would be great as well… am a regular user, so i dont want to root or whatever…

I used to be a multitouch basher. But the fact is, a touch-only phone without multitouch would provide a very, very, very painful typing experience.

As for zooming in and out, I agree almost nobody uses that on the iPhone.

But again, it’s a must have for typing and game controls on a touch-only phone.
