Motorola DROID named Time’s top gadget of the year

New_Droid[1]The almighty Motorola DROID has come out on top in Time Magazine’s annual top 10 listing of best gadgets of the year.  Beating out devices such as the Nook and iPhone 3GS, amongst others, some would say that the DROID was a relative underdog in the contest.  Nobody can deny the fact that the first official phone to run Android 2.0 has made shock waves in the industry since it’s veiled discovery.  This phone, along with Verizon’s new “there’s a map for that” campaign have seemed to push AT&T back on its heels a bit in an effort to save face.  The momentum is definitely with the DROID and it doesn’t seem to be letting up anytime soon.  Congratulations to Motorola and Google grabbing the top spot in a field of incredible gadgets.  An excerpt from Time on the DROID and a video describing each of the 10 winners can be viewed after the jump.

From Time:

…a smartphone operating system isn’t all that satisfying without an actual kick-ass smartphone wrapped around it. Now Android has one: The Droid is a hefty beast, a metal behemoth without the gloss and finish of the iPhone, but you don’t miss it. The Droid’s touchscreen is phenomenally sharp and vivid, it has an actual physical (not great, but good enough) keyboard, and best of all, the Droid is on Verizon’s best-of-breed 3G network. It’s Android’s first credible challenge to the iPhone.

Well done Moto, I’ve been waiting for that for a long time, and have been writting to Motorola complaining to them for not making (good) phones to South Africa any more. I really miss Moto.
