It would have been easy to assume that the Droid was the new name for the Motorola Sholes, as many phones start off with a code name that gets changed before the launch. No one would have assumed that the name Droid would be used to also refer to phones from other manufacturers aside from Motorola.
Indeed, rumor has it that the HTC Desire will land with Verizon on November 6th as the Motorola Droid Eris. Furthermore, we might even see the original Motorola Droid released under AT&T with the original name, Sholes. There is a lot going on at the moment and a number of the rumors are coming from Engadget, who are more often right than wrong. We’ll keep our eyes and ears pealed and let you know the facts once they’re confirmed.
