Motorola CLIQ, CLIQ XT, BackFlip Android 2.1 updates pushed back to late Q3, early Q4

by: Michael OrylAugust 22, 2010

According to a recent post by a Motorola employee on the Motorola Support Forums, Moto has been having a bit more trouble getting OpenGL working on the CLIQ, CLIQ XT, and BackFlip than expected, which is delaying the already long delayed update to Android 2.1 for these devices, which was originally promised for Q2 of 2010.  The statement reads as follows:

The quality of experience for consumers is a top priority in providing upgrades to our current product portfolio. In working through Android 2.1 upgrades for CLIQ, CLIQ XT, and Backflip, certain hardware configurations have been limiting upgrade capabilities. We are currently integrating and testing HW drivers essential for OpenGL functionality for these upgrades. We believe OpenGL, the industry’s most widely used, supported and best documented 2D/3D graphics API, is an integral part of our customer experience and we’re taking the time to ensure this experience is optimized on these products. Testing continues and we anticipate providing the upgrade on each of these devices in the late Q3/early Q4 timeframe.

My son the computer geek told me I would be disappointed with an android phone, that I should buy the I phone because it had superior apps and support. I don’t know about the apps, but he was sure right about the support. My backflip has performed poorly since day one but with the promise of an update to bring it up to competitive operation I have kept it. I have returned to the store where I bought the phone a number of times and at first the clerks tried to be help full, but now I’m told they no longer carry the backflip, better models have been released. Thank goodness my at&t data package is transferable to the I phone I plan to purchase. And believe me, when the time comes, I know better than to buy a motorola or android tablet computer.
