Moto X wood option (Bamboo) now available on Moto Maker for $100 premium (updated)

The long awaited real wood back cover for the Moto X is now real.

For now, only the Bamboo option is available on the Moto Maker customization site, for a price to match the uniqueness of the material – $100, on top of the regular price of the device of $99-$199 on contract. Motorola promised back in August several types of wood, including Rosewood and Teak, but for now only Bamboo is available in the Natural section.

You won’t get to enjoy your fine crafted bamboo-made Moto X very soon though – at least for now, the option is listed as “delayed shipping”. We’ve contacted Motorola to ask about what that means precisely, but the chances that the wood Moto X will ship in time for Christmas seem slim.

The wood material of the back plate is framed by white plastic, regardless of the choice of color for the front. You can select all the usual accent colors, and you can also apply a signature, though, we have to say, the engraving it’s hardly visible on the bamboo background.

Word travels fast: Moto Maker has been throwing error messages for the past ten minutes, which means that people are interested in the Bamboo version of the Moto X, despite the premium it carries. What about you?

Update: here’s the official Moto X Bamboo FAQ from Motorola customer support:

That wood back alone costs more than the Lumia 521, a decent but very well built smartphone. xD

Very pretty, sure, but $100 is rather steep, especially when you can’t even get your back to match your front if you want it in black.

    • Jayfeather787

Bit too expensive, but really cool. Something new to the phone world.

I like the bamboo the best of any of the options. I don’t see how they can charge $100.00 for it. It does make this very unique.

      50 at most Moto.
