Locket app places ads on your lockscreen, pays you to swipe them away

by: Andrew GrushJuly 19, 2013

Hate advertisements with a passion that burns brighter than ten-thousand suns? Then Locket is not the app for you. On the other hand, if you really aren’t bothered by the idea of being served advertisements on your lock-screen, the folks behind Locket are more than willing to pay you to take a look at their ads.

The Locket app turns your lockscreen into an advertising zone and promises real cash each time you swipe-to-unlock your phone. Unfortunately, we are talking pennies here – literally. For every swipe, you’ll earn one penny. The catch is that you will be limited to just 3 swipes per hour.

So what can you do with the money earned? You can always cash it out, turn it into a gift card, or even donate the funds to charity.

Doing the math, IF you were to unlock 3 times each and every hour, 24/7 for an entire year, you’d only manage to bring in $262.80. In reality, you will likely earn considerably less when you factor in sleep and – you know- your real life.

Still if you are looking for a few spare bucks and don’t mind ads, Locket promises an experience that is much less invasive than Kindle’s approach, giving users the choice of whether to engage with the ads or not. Locket also promises to be discriminate in the advertising partners it accepts, ensuring that what you are seeing isn’t just pure junk.

So what can you do with the money earned? You can always cash it out, turn it into a gift card, or even donate the funds to charity if you prefer.

What do you think, would you ever consider downloading such an app, or are the few pennies earned not worth the trouble?

    Widgetlocker FTW! :3 :P

  • Charles Chambers

What would this do to battery life?

    • Locket

Barely anything. I doubt you would notice any different at all.

So the app makers will make a ton of money, advertisers will make a ton…you make pennies……”IF you were to unlock 3 times each and every hour, 24/7 for an entire year, you’d only manage to bring in $262.80″ Yeah, it’s a rip off.

Well, you are winning money by sliding your finger in a piece of glass, what do you expect? This isn’t supposed to make you a billionaire or replace your job

  • Brandon Giesing

But then consider if all your family members did the same thing!

4 family members all have Android phones/tablets install this app, all swipe 3 times per hour for at least 18 hours.

You get approximately $800 per year!

But in all seriousness, do all your family members have Android devices plus are all of them going to install this and do it 3 times every hour?

Although I have to say, it is probably the easiest way to make money I have ever seen.

And how long is this going to last? Maybe the devs realize that this wasn’t such a good idea and they shut this down after 6 months. That means you’ve watched advertisement every day to get you few bucks that you lost to the extra electricity needed to charge your device after this eats it faster. Yippee!

    • rabidhunter

Or 4 family members, each with a smart phone and a tablet. Now you’re getting enough money for a yearly family vacation. Or upgrading at least two of the devices every year.

        It’s not going to happen.

  • Deo Reyes

      • Android wins!

        ‘Murica only. I hate that.

      • Deo Reyes

Really? That’s how you help people, by calling them a dumbass? Thank you for calling me a dumbass just because of not knowing the availability of a single app in our country. I hope you could help more people by calling them dumbasses. Goodluck with that.

  • You could consider this as a way to get netflix for free.

  • I love it, it looks great, and well I don’t mind to have those ads, anyways is free money.

  • FOG

Reminds me of these applications you’d install on a PC and that would put a bar with advertisement… Alladvantage for example. Than referrals would make you earn more… Lasted for some time but not long!

  • monkeypox69

Honestly, who the Hell would be dumb enough to install this?

  • monkeypox69

Is a penny a swipe really worth it to whore yourself out like this?
