For years now, LG hasn’t been a big name in the Android smartphone world, in a race dominated by Samsung, Motorola, and HTC. But this year has shaped up to be the year of the underdog, with companies like Huawei, ZTE, and LG releasing legitimate contenders for the title of best Android smartphone of 2012.
Apart from its high-end lineup, LG also introduced the Optimus L series in February this year, at the MWC 2012. The three device series includes the L3, L5, and L7 smartphones, which were expected to debut in Q2 this year.
Just barely keeping with the stated timeline, LG today announced the release of the Optimus L5 smartphone in Europe. The device will first be available, later this month, in the UK, France, and Germany, then followed by CIS, the Middle East, and Asia. A South and Central American release will happen soon after.
The LG Optimus L5 specifications include:
The decidedly mid-range device will also feature dual-SIM capability in the CIS, Middle East, Asia, South and Central American markets. European and North American releases will feature NFC “Tag and Play” for peer-to-peer sharing and mobile commerce. The device will also feature a new UX along with a QuickMemo application, that will allow users to instantly take notes without needing to open a separate app. You can see this feature in action in our LG Optimus 4X HD review.
While the specifications are nothing to boast about, the phone, claimed to be “the slimmest in its class,” is very sleek and stylish and is sure to turn a few heads. There is no official information on the cost of the device yet, but a low price-point will only help its cause. It is a good option for those who don’t want to splurge over $700 on a high-end device, but won’t compromise on form factor.
