LG Innotek, the team responsible for LG’s component manufacturing, has launched the world’s first 15-watt wireless quick charging pad, said to rival the charge speeds of wired quick charging.

The charging pads, originally unveiled in March, are said to be three times faster than standard 5W wireless charging modules and could boost devices up to 50 percent in 30 minutes – a claim which should be taken with a pinch of salt given the great disparity between battery capacities in current smartphones.

Is wireless charging dead? Does it even matter?

Further, LG says that the charging pads feature ‘embedded sensors’ which measure temperature to help prevent overheating. ‘It can even reduce the risk of the explosion of the battery and performance degradation of the smartphone,’ said LG Innotek in a press release.

The wireless charging pads will be available in North America, Europe, and Australia in October for a yet to be specified price tag. LG Innotek says they will be compatible with most smartphones.

Wireless charging hasn’t yet been widely adopted, thanks in part to its traditionally slower charge speeds when compared to wired methods. Is this solution about to change things? Give us your thoughts in the comments.
