Video shows Android 4.4 KitKat on LG G2

Meizu MX3 vs LG G2 thin bezels what

A YouTube video shows off Android 4.4 KitKat running on the LG G2, but don’t expect to see any massive changes to the phone’s user interface with the update.

The nearly 3-minute video uses the new scree recording feature of KitKat to show off the update to the LG G2. Without the section of the video that specially shows the Android version number as 4.4, however, you might mistake it for a video of the G2 running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.

There are a few changes to the UI of the LG G2 with the Android 4.4. update, but they’re all very minor. The icons in the status bar are all the same light grey color, for example. The update also seems to rearrange some elements of the notification tray while adding a new print option.

LG also implemented the new fullscreen mode in the camera and browser apps in the G2 running KitKat. Fullscreen mode gets rid of the black (or white, depending on your settings on the phone) bar around the virtual buttons. The feature lets you see more content on a website or more objects in your frame in the camera app.

The Android 4.4 KitKat update started rolling out to Korean LG G2 units in December, but it hasn’t spread to everyone just yet. This video is the closest some G2 owners will get to KitKat for a little while, depending on the speed of the global rollout. If nothing else, this video proves the update is real, and will theoretically reach other models soon.

As you still waiting for the update to Android 4.4 KitKat on your phone?

    Bout time.

  • MasterMuffin

It must be tough for Samsung and LG to updage phones with so huge skins on top!

    “scree recording”

    • MadCowOnAStick

recording screes is the best though!

      • MasterMuffin

absolutely the best thing one can do! ;D

  • Updates that sucks

Updates like these are pointless…. They better at least fix the bugs like screen flicking, Phantom screen selection, auto focus in video mode, and add some actual useful shits to qslide ie. Browser?? Damn wtf was LG thinking omitting that?

    • Markus Ressel

      QSlide already has a browser.

    • Mushdagrt

Yeah I hope so because 4.3 indeed mucked up my gs4 ..wish I would have never updated..

    • @sexyhamthing

      theres a qslide browser o.O

  • andreinic

… In the meantime the Optimus G is still running 4.1.2. I will think twice before buying LG.

    • smokebomb

Want updates? Buy GPE or Nexus.

      • Joshua Hill

Or Samsung, Sony, HTC, Motorola, e.t.c.

You don’t have to and shouldn’t have to buy play store devices to get a basic level of updates. LG could have done better with the Optimus G. Hopefully this update for the G2 is a sign LG are improving.

        • Kevin Lambert

Optimus G owner here, since launch.

Agree with you completely. It’s ridiculous that LG gave their flagship device such little support.

I’ve read somewhere that it’s also up to the carriers to get updates out, though, as 4.4 is actually being enjoyed by LG OG owners on a carrier known as Elisa in Estonia.

There are rumors of At&T’s LG OG being upgraded to 4.2 someday, but no actual proof. It’s a pretty sh*tty way to treat your customers I’d say.

What is that phone on the left?

    • Leo

It called MX3, from a Chinese company Meizu.

      • Jack

  • cdlq456

    Wow, what an ugly skin

  • beboo

I’ll never buy LG device ever again after the 4X HD and the horrible jelly bean experience
even if they make the best phone in this world

    • Sebastian Jena

it was because Nvidia and their horrible Tegra3, i had this phone for a year. sh*tty battery life, lags on most games etc… meh. Never choose Nvidia.

  • Jaun Lombard

WOW their drop down menu is butt ugly!!!

  • Lashek Powell

    Look like the optimus g

  • thartist

LG, WHY DID YOU DO THAT TO KITKAT!

  • mustbepbs

Did they seriously have to pull a Samsung and fuck with the Settings like that? Their UI looks so awful.

  • Leonardo Rojas

Not bad at all. Much better than Samsung’s UI for me.

Btw, my Xperia ZL is still waiting for the 4.3 update. I live in Lima, Peru. (Unlocked ZL) Should I worry?

    • Benjamin

Hey mate! My ZL is already on 4.3! Update via Sony Update Service: http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/update-service/

Mine took less than 15 minutes to update. Cheers!

      • Leonardo Rojas

        Thanks for your suggestion!
I’m afraid that I’m afraid of screwing up my ZL’s apps’ configurations. Haha
I don’t want the update to destroy my satisfaction with this device.

I’m just being paranoid. Ha. I’ll update later n.n

Btw, have you seen an improvement in battery life? How about RAM management? I had to use a tweak to make the system really use the 2GB of RAM, before, it closed too soon/fast any minimized app. You might have not noticed this, but you can try this: pick 2 folders containing a similar amount of data of some 500MB each, of audio and video respectively, compress them with 2 different file managers (Es and Root Explorer, for example) use one for each folder. Then open a site with your browser, then open NFS MW and play some races till you see the notification for the compression jobs telling you the compression is done.

If you are playing and no notification shows up in some minutes, it means the jobs were killed by the system. Also, you can minimize the game and see the progress of the jobs from time to time. Minimizing should not reload the launcher.
This all will take you less than 10 minutes and the performance of the game should not be affected. If the jobs were killed by the system you’ll see a .tmp file in the folder where there should be the compressed folders. This will mean that the system can’t handle that multitasking, that it’s not well configured and the 2GB of RAM are not being used as they should.

Please, try this. If the jobs got killed I’ll help you with the tweak. Then you’ll see real multitasking.

        – L

*NFSMW cause other games are too lightweight.

I don’t care about KitKat. I care about having a recent apps button, rather than a stupid menu button.

  • shivansh

desperately waiting for 4.4 update for my g2

  • Andrew White

So ‘if and when’ the update arrives for my Optimus G Pro it will time to by another phone, right.
Maybe what really drives us (me) though, is the next big thing in ‘hardware’.
Quality of on screen display, camera, battery life,
SD card, processor speed, size and how easily it connects with other devices e.g. the TV or homeserver.
One thing is certain, no one manufacturer has got everything right to date, so it seems we are going to have to live with compromise….again.

  • @sexyhamthing

How is this man having transparent home keys in novalauncher…. im running stock rom, rooted with xposed framework xD

    • Leonardo Rojas

G2 Xposed? Can you tell me if it has bugs? Is it working perfectly?
I’d like to install it on my brother’s G2. I’d appreciate your comments about it.
      Thank you n.n

      • @sexyhamthing

Yep, everything is perfect :P works perfectly … worth the money :3
        dem sexy softkeys :3

  • Zylvain Sauve

this is not kitkat. that’s is not released out yet for LG G2. that is jelly beans.

  • bob smiths

I rooted my droid with paranoid android and man this LG G2 is fast… Its insanely fast. I have only encountered 1 bug with it which was trivial
