We got to take our first look at the LG Pro 2 at MWC 2014, and we were definitely impressed by the large device, that is aiming to take a cut of the high-end phablet pie away from Samsung. Here’s the unboxing and first impressions of the LG G Pro 2!

Removing the lid of the box brings you face to face with the large LG G Pro 2. The box is of course, made to size, but the device covering the entire length of it, makes quite a first impression. In the box is a micro USB cable, an AC adapter, and a somewhat peculiar headphone jack nub, an accessory that is quite common in Asia, and helps keep the device dust free.

One welcome addition is the availability of the premium LG Quad Beat 2 earphones, and it’s nice to see it included with the phone. Also great is the inclusion of an extra battery, along with a charger for the spare, to help you supplement what should already be a good battery life. Keep in mind though that the extra battery and charger are usually available with the South Korean version, and we’ll have to wait and see whether these extras are available in other markets as well.

Taking the film off from the front of the device really hits home the all-display feeling of the phone. Like with the other new LG smartphones, the LG G Pro 2 comes with a button layout at the rear of the device, leaving the front clean and with no distractions. Insert the large 3,200 mAh battery and push on the power button at the back of the device to get started.

While the setup is a pretty standard process, an interesting software feature with the LG G Pro 2 is Knock Code, that lets you tap out a pattern on the display to unlock the device. We’ll be taking a more detailed look at Knock Code in an upcoming feature focus.

As always with any LG device, you get the bright, colorful, and feature-packed Optimus UI. In fact, pulling down on the notification menu, gives you an almost complete list of apps, functions, and features available with the G Pro 2, barely leaving any space for notifications in the notifications drop down.

What’s interesting to note is that the brightness has been turned down a little bit, which is testament to the amazing quality of the 1080p display of the G Pro 2. Colors are wonderful and the display really shines through, and this is going to be a great screen for media consumption.

With a 5.9-inch display, the LG G Pro 2 is a large device, regardless of how thin the bezels around the screen are, and one-handed operation is a little difficult. The good thing is that despite being so big, its relatively easy to grip, courtesy of a thin form factor that was possible by moving the buttons to the back of the device, along with the a new understated matte finish back cover that makes the phablet very comfortable to hold.
