According to a “trusted, industry-related source” Samsung will launch the Galaxy S IV at the Mobile World Congress 2013 which will be held in Barcelona from 25-28 February. Samsung has used European trade shows to launch major products in the past. The Samsung Galaxy S III made its debut in May in London while the Galaxy Note II was announced at IFA in Berlin. And of course the Samsung S II was unveiled at the 2011 Mobile World Congress.
This means that a S4 announcement at Barcelona is possible. However, all of these rumors need to be taken with due caution as only a few days ago the speculation was that Samsung would unveil the 2013 flagship Galaxy handset at CES in January.
The S3 has only been shipping since July and if Samsung unveils the S4 at MWC 2013 and starts shipping it in May 2013 then the S3 will have been superseded in less than 10 months. This might not be a happy prospect for users who recently handed over their hard earned cash for the S3.
Also this latest rumor contradicts current speculation that Samsung is having trouble establishing the max production of full HD 4.99 inch panel for the new smartphone. Although the specifications of the S4 can’t be known, it is assumed that the device will feature a full HD display along with an ARM Cortex-A15 based processor from Samsung’s Exynos 5-Series.
One reason why the rapid release of the S4 could be true is because Samsung needs to continue releasing flagship handsets at the same pace as Apple. Current speculation is that Apple will start shipping the iPhone 5S in the summer of 2013. Apple traditionally don’t announce a product until it is ready to ship where as Samsung prefer to announce products several months ahead of their availability dates.
What do you think? Will the S4 and iPhone 5S start shipping this summer?
