If you ask an art critic what they think of Jeff Koons, you’re unlikely to get a lukewarm response. This polarizing artist is regarded as either a Neo-pop genius or a peddler of cheap kitsch with very few holding more moderate views of his work and reputation. Now you can have some artistic controversy slapped to the back of your Nexus with these Jeff Koons-themed Live cases.

These cases depict images from Koons’s “Gazing Ball” series, and each comes paired with a live wallpaper. In addition, you’ll gain access to a digital collection of artwork by the artist, and you will periodically receive this content directly on your device. Whether you’re into art or not, it’s definitely a different look for a smartphone case.

If you’re a philistine like myself who wouldn’t know high art if it slapped him in the face with a banana, let’s take a look at what some more wizened sorts have to say of this artist. Jerry Saltz of artnet.com praises Koons, saying he was “wowed by the technical virtuosity and eye-popping visual blast” that the artist creates. On the other hand, Michael Kimmelman of the New York Times called his work “one last, pathetic gasp of the sort of self-promoting hype and sensationalism that characterized the worst of the 1980’s.” But love him or hate him, Koons has proven to have had a large influence on younger artists like Jack Daws, Matthieu Laurette, and Damien Hirst.

Of his own work, Koons offers only a shrug. “A viewer might at first see irony in my work… but I see none at all. Irony causes too much critical contemplation.” He claims that there is no deeper meaning to anything that he creates. The art simply is.

Regardless of whether or not you’re interested in what does or does not qualify as “art,” these cases are certainly visually striking. Each is numbered, and they will only be available for a limited time. Bidding for these pieces begins (and ends) at $40 in the Google Store. The cases are designed for use with the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. Click the button below to grab yours, and let us know what you think of Koons and his work in the comments below!
