Apple iPhone 5s vs Samsung Galaxy S4 aa 13

When it comes to smartphone brands, Samsung and Apple are easily two of the most recognized names in the business. Now that the iPhone 5s has arrived, you might be curious to see how Apple’s latest and greatest will stack up against Samsung’s trusty Galaxy S4.

With that in mind, let’s take a quick look at how the Apple iPhone 5s compares to the Samsung Galaxy S4. In a hurry? The video is at the bottom.

Design and build quality

Ah, the plastic versus “premium” materials debate. It’s true, many folks feel that plastic just doesn’t cut it anymore. If you don’t like plastic, you’re in good company with the iPhone 5s (but not the 5c). The handset features an aluminum shell, chamfered edges, and a home button that is made of sapphire crystal.

In the other corner, we have the Galaxy S4. While the handset may have a polycarbonate chassis, it is still quite a looker and is very durable.

In terms of size and weight, the Samsung Galaxy S4 is obviously the bigger of the two, namely because its display is a whole inch larger. The Galaxy S4 is 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm and weighs in at 130 grams. In contrast, the iPhone 5s comes in 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6mm and is only 112 grams.

The iPhone 5s features a 4-inch Retina display, with a resolution of 1136 x 640, rated at 326ppi. In comparison, the Galaxy S4 has a much larger 5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 1920, and a considerably higher pixel density of 441ppi.

The Galaxy S4 brings with a it a 13MP camera with a f/2.2 aperture. There’s also a BSI, auto focus, digital image stabilization, and tons of special software features to help make your camera experience the best possible on the GS4.

On the iPhone 5s you’ll find an 8MP camera with f/2.2 aperture. The camera also features 3X zoom, dual-LED flash and special iOS 7 features such as a new burst mode that takes 10 frames per second.

Let’s not beat around the bush here, the Galaxy S4’s removable 2,600 mAh kills the iPhone 5s in terms of battery life. The handset is rated for 17 hours of talk/3G, 15.4 days stand-by time and around 10 hours of browsing/Wi-Fi usage.

The iPhone 5s has a much smaller non-removable 1,570 mAh Li-Po battery that is rated for only 10 hours of talk/3G, 10.4 days standby and around 10 hours browsing/Wi-Fi.

The Apple iPhone 5s is the world’s first 64-bit smartphone, featuring a 1.7GHz A7 64-bit dual-core CPU. Beyond that, the phone has a fingerprint scanner, 1GB RAM and 16/32/64GB storage options.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is no longer a spring chicken, but it still packs plenty of punch with its 1.9GHz Snapdragon 600 CPU and Adreno 320 GPU. There’s also 2GB RAM, 16/32GB internal storage and microSD support. There might not be a fingerprint scanner, but you do get NFC and a infrared blaster – two features you won’t find on the iPhone.

The iPhone 5s comes standard with iOS 7 and packs quite a few special features. The redesign also seems to look a bit like Android at first glance.

As for the Galaxy S4? We get Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. That means you get the full power of Android, as well as tons of special Samsung apps and features including Smart Pause, S Health, and air gestures.

Hands-on video

Wrap up

What it comes down to here is preference. Sammy fans aren’t going to care much for the iPhone 5s, and vice versa for Apple fans.

Our take? The iPhone 5s is a solid handset, though we wouldn’t go so far as to call it revolutionary or groundbreaking. If you don’t mind Apple’s locked down approach and the small display, it’s a pretty nice phone really.

For those of us that prefer the open nature of Android, the winner in this smartphone battle is pretty clear.

  • Jusephe

I would like to appoint that iPhone 5S is running it’s dualcore at just 1,29 Ghz (compared to 1,30 for iPhone 5) not 1,7 Ghz.

I see you didn’t dig into 5S specs very deep. I would like to see some benchmarks on both to give us a better comparasion in terms of performance.

    • lesportif

      Here are the benchmarks :

The tiny iPhone destroys the competition, but yes, still limited to small screen and locked-down OS.

      • MasterMuffin

Browser tests to compare the performance are sh*t. If you change your browser, you can get a change of over 500 in sunspider. Same with any browser test (Kraken, Peacekeeper, HMTL5test etc.)

        • lesportif

You’re right… but there are much more than browser tests in Anand’s review… and elsewhere…

          • MasterMuffin

I know, just pointing that out, because some people really think that browser benchmarks tell the performance of the hardware :)

          • mikegonzalez2k

Run a 3D intense game, then we’ll see which blows the other out of the water in performance. Qualcomm makes some of the fastest processors in the world. The A7 can’t even come close.

          • lesportif

Stop living in denial mike. The best mobile graphic chips are made by Imagination Technologies (PowerVR line), and each iPhone features the best from IT, making them the best mobile gaming machines, year after year. Have you been living in a cave ?

          • mikegonzalez2k

Actually the company Nvidia makes the best graphics chips in the world. Nvidia’s supercomputer TITAN graphics cards have proven this at many GPU conferences. Just this year they took that same architecture (Kepler which is the most advanced in the world) and created a mobile version of it. Nvidia was sucessfully able to run Kepler architecture on Tegra5 (Project Logan).

I’m well aware of IT, and it’s involvement back in the day when 3dfx was around. They have been competitive to Nvidia, but Nvidia holds the lead and has for a long time.

Let’s see any iPhone or iPad run dynamic tessellation or anything close to this Level of Detail.

          • lesportif

Ok Mike. I hope for NVidia to be able to make those plans real. There is still a problem : they keep comparing their 2014 chip (Tegra 5) with Apple’s SoC from 2012 (iPad 4 – PowerVR SGX554 as you said). In a month or two, Apple will begin to sell (as in “in the hands of customers”) a tablet with an A7X chip capable of twice the performance of the A6X it replaces (as they do each year) and they’ll do the same trick in 2014. Do you really think NVidia’s marketing stunt will help them with the basic fact that they’re running after the train ?
What if Apple decides to ditch PowerVR GPU and starts to build its own graphic parts ? What if they succeed in the way their Cyclone core just did last week ? I seriously hope there will still be some competition in the future, but I don’t see anyone facing Apple except Intel.

          • mikegonzalez2k

Power VR is the only thing actually keeping Apple competitive. They won’t ditch them, because it’s the strongest competitor to Nvdia, without PowerVR Apple would be lost. They don’t know graphics technology, they know design and marketing.
Assume the A7x is twice as fast as the A6X. Given that Tegra5 is currently 5x as fast as the A6x if you doubled the A6x’s performance you would still have a 4/5 ratio, so Tegra5 would still be faster. What should also be considered is that the demonstration of Tegra5 was a non-optimized version of Kepler architecture. In other words, they aren’t done improving it. By the time it launches in March it will have significantly been improved. We could be looking at more like 7x or even 9x the performance of the A6x. So yeah A7x can multiply their performance by 2x, but that’s nothing compared to what Tegra5 can already do. It’s still only 80% of a PROTOTYPE model.

          • lesportif

If you wish Mike. One day NVidia will be king. Sure.

          • mikegonzalez2k

They already are king. Anyone with an actual background in computer science that is important knows this.

Please do your research on the Titan Supercomputer that was funded ($97 million) by the United States Department of Energy.
Because of Nvidia’s Tesla GPU’s Titan is capable of 27 PetaFlops.

Last year the US Dept. of Energy continue further funding Nvidia’s research into Exascale computing by granting them $12 million.
They hope to replace Titan in 2016 with a 200 petaFLOPS system.

Additionally DARPA granted Nvidia $20 million last year to (within 5 years) revolutionize the power efficiency of embedded computing technologies.
The goal of which is to develop processors that have 75 times the processing power of current embedded systems.

You simply aren’t educated enough to be aware of what is going on in the scientific world. If you were, you would have known this as it’s been all over the news for the past couple of years. Regardless of your lack of higher education you cannot deny the facts. Whether you believe them or not is irrelevant, because these projects exist and are actually changing the world despite ignorant sheep like yourself.

          • lesportif

Thanks for the lesson then !

          • MasterMuffin

All bow in front of the mighty omniscient overlord…

          • nioh

            Hey Mike,
You are talking future here, who knows what Apple and others besides Nvidia holds there. In the current situation Nvidias Tegra 4 is the competitor to iPhone 5S. Nvidia has not Tesla GPU:s available for mobile chip sets yet.
However I’ve read benchmarks where Tegra 4 trade blows with the Snapdragon 800 and it would certainly give Apple A7 a strong match as well.
I would really like to see more manufacturers of tablets and smartphones adapt Nvidias Tegra 4. There are a few on their way but it seems like Qualcomm has the upper hand here for now.

However if what you say is true about Tegra 5 then 2014 will be a very interesting year. :) I’m looking forward to it……

        • Brian Paquette

why are u comparing what Nvidia could possibly do in the future and their titan gpu a 1000$ card for pcs to the iphone. this is iphone vs galaxy s4 not nvidias best tech. All Iphone 5s’s benchmarks are higher than other phones

          • MasterMuffin

Replied to the wrong guy dude :)

      • nioh

I don’t think you read Anands test thoroughly. The iPhone5S is not destroying the competition. The CPU-performance test is almost only based on different kinds of javascript engines except for Browsermark the last test in Anands cpu-department, wich is a more complete webbrowser test, only partly using js-engine.
However still far from a complete CPU-test because the CPU has to do alot more than just webbrowsing and javascript.

For me that isn’t giving much about the actual hardware CPU-performance. That is a sign how good Apple has optimized their software, Android isn’t anywhere near as well optimized. Great work by Apple! Google have catching up todo here.
And Anand mentions that in his test, pointing out theese benchmarks maybe subjects of optimization.

If you check Geekbench and Linpack tests the iPhone 5S is usually outperformed by Snapdragon 800 based devices with exceptions ofcourse. But in Anands test the 5S is only compared to other iPhone models in Geekbench. Look for Geekbench performance in the likes of Xperia Z1, LG G2 and Galaxy Note 3 and you will see what S800 is capable of.

In graphics intensive use like GLBenchmark 2.7 T-Rex (1080p off-screen) it is performing like the Adreno 330 in S800 chipsets.

In 3Dmark Icestorm tests Snapdragon 800 usually outperformes iPhone 5S thanks to its 4 core CPU wich can handle more physics. Ands thats often true for other tests as well were the application can take advantage of all 4 CPU cores.

At last I have to apologize for my bad English, it is not as good as I want it to be because English isn’t my native language.

      • williamsteven

It only won over 6 month or older former Android devices it still lose to Galaxy Note 3 and Xperia Z1 in all performance test, geek bench,GL benchmark, etc.

  • blanco112

I have a Galaxy S4 and I really don’t see how they rate it at a 10 hour browsing/Wifi phone. But I still love it and would pick it over the 5S.

  • karlhein12

I like both phones .give me one!

  • Adam Goldberg

I am about to get shunned for what I say here. I love android. And I really really do. Like so much. Like i’d marry it if it were a female person. Well probably not that far, but you get my point. so when you see what I say, please don’t lose your brains and shun the shit out of me:
    Build Quality/Design- iPhone
    Display- Galaxy S4
    Camera- Galaxy S4
    Battery- Galaxy S4
    Specs- Galaxy S4
    Software- iPhone
Score- Galaxy S4 (4-3) (Software is Double points becasuse it is a huge factor in the phone itself. Its a majority of the experience in my opinion.) To explain why iPhone beats the S4 in Software, it is not that iOS7 is better than android, because (GUESS WHAT!) it’s not. I have iOS7 winning here because I’ve grown to hate the in your face, childish, gimmick infested android skin on the S4. I love android, guys, but I quite frankly hate what Samusng has done to it. I’d be just fine if they went ahead with tizen.

    • Farbod

What are these specs you speak of that are better than the 5s, in real life usage? The cpu is better, the gpu is better, the ram is more efficient. It has a motion processor. The design is thinner and lighter, the battery life is the same. (Real life usage) and the only thing the s4 has better is nfc and a gimmick ir blaster

      • Wildfire

Who the hell told you that the cpu is better ? It’s a 64 bit ok but still a dual core. GPU ain’t better ,it’s only the 640p of the iphone that gives more performance against the 1080p quality. We don’t care about your design. And actually ,the iphone 5s may have a faster brandwitch RAM than the 5 but it’s still a 1GB against 2GB of the S4. Don’t try to argue ,2GB is way more useuful. The battery of the S4 is bigger ,so if you know how to handle cpu speed, disabling all the other modes. You’ll have a better battery life.

        • Farbod

please come out of the darkness of ignorance. cpu is faster go search google. even the offscreen benchmarks are faster. ios manages ram better and needs less ram (having more ram has no point when you dont experience lags in anything from scrolling to infinity blade 3) real life battery usage is about the same (search google)

          • Wildfire

The ignorance is on your side. Having more ram has no point ? Omg that’s one of the most stupid thing i’ve ever heard. Who the heck is telling you that top end android smartphones lag ? Tim cook ? having more ram is suitable for multi tasking. That’s why the iphone is only for simple tasks. I prefer waiting half a second to run an app and have twice the number of apps running. the only benchmark of the cpu for the iphone is Geekbench ,there are non yet. only BROWSER and GPU. Gpu tests may have better performance thanks to 640p display against 1080p on the other side. Battery life on androids are better when you know how tu use it

          • Don

You do know that more does not always equal better, right? The iPhone doesn’t NEED more ram because it is used much more efficiently.

Also, more cores does not equal more speed. Most apps don’t even utilize 2 cores.

          • Wildfire

Dude have you a problem undertanding what is multitasking ?
More RAM and more cores = More apps running in the same time. What can i say more. Of course it’s better !!

          • Adam Goldberg

This was just not my intention. Jesus. guys. this is actually pretty frickin sad. like im sorry. it’s androidauthority, not iphone imbosile so please, take the petty arguement somewhere else, I just made a statement, didn’t know I would kick off world war three. And Farbod, no need to get super offended bro. it was just a comment. calm your tits k?

          • Octy

LOL. so here is my opinion guyz:
iPhone fans say more ram is useless because iOS is better optimised than Android, more CPU cores than dual core are not needed since they are not used by most applications, that 64 bit with 1gb or ram is better than 32 bit with 2gb of ram.
Can I laugh again? Are you kidding me?
So here is what I think: iOS is designed and optimized to use less resources, so that Apple can sell you lower performance hardware with a higher profit margin!
Quad core CPU is better than dual core CPU because each app gets its own processing power, and that’s why more ram is better, because each app can run independently. 64 bit is great, yeah, but right now the 5s users will become beta testers for this tech until the iphone 6 comes out, therefore it’s an experimental technology without any immediate benefits.
Also, the S4 camera is far superior because hear me out, megapixels count. I want detail in a photo, not just correct colors so if apple wanted to stay on top they would have made a 13mp camera with larger pixels than the S4. Instead, they are holding back the MP jump for the iphone 6. Hell, I can’t wait to get my hands on the iphone 6! I currently have the Galaxy S4, eventhough I despised Android for many years. This is the best for me because it has all the power I need, large screen, but not too large, I have 2 batteries (so if I have to leave home quickly, or I go to places without power, I just swap them). The games run great at 1080p without lag. Try Asphalt 8, Ironman 3 for a change. What I miss on the S4 are the headphones of the iphone which are better because I hate in ear types.

          • Koko

What ever make u sleep at night

          • Jerk

So u are writing this comment while u re playing asphalt 8 ?

          • Koko

Dude if u r going to disable half GS4 features just to save battery that is lame and stupid why the hick u wanna do that if u have better battery hhhhhhhh

  • George

I have owned both phones I’m using the samsung s4 I like the iPhone put it’s like a Porsche always looks the same little changes that why I changed to samsung don’t need a computer to add things to the phone with samsung I can do it all from the phone.

    • Fox Ray

Since when does one need a computer to add something to the iPhone? You sure it was an iPhone that you owned? Maybe it was one of those Chinese copies with Android installed on it ^^

      • George

On the iPhone how do u put music on it buy it from iTunes or syc with computer samsung down load from phone and free u must be using Mexican iPhone

        • Fox Ray

Download from phone, ok that doesn’t make sense to me. How do you get your music from your computer on your S4? Pls tell me …

          • George

Don’t make sense from google play down load app with millions of song down load the song I what and play it straight away u pay for it or syc with computer write don’t for get iOS 7 looks a bit like an android ha

          • Fox Ray

No no, the question is, how do you copy music from your computer to your S4, now you are talking about spotify kind of services. So my best guess is you can’t, just as me you have to connect your phone to your computer if you want to copy music from your computer to your phone. BTW we have spotify and now we have iTunes radio.

          • George

Hallo we have sd card u .can u send a photo or song with Bluetooth no have u got smart scroll smart stay air view air gesture screen mirroring multi window no the samsung s3 has more then the iPhone 5s and that is 2 years old by the time the iPhone is like the samsung s4 a few more years to come way behind u finally got a live wallpaper that why u have to hack a iPhone to do what a android does hay

          • Fox Ray

So you copy music from your computer to your SD card and from your SD card to your S4, thats awesome :) Yeah I copy it straight from my computer to my iPhone :) Its truly innovating what you are doing :) And yes I can perfectly send music and pictures and even movies through Bluetooth. Air gestures :) why would I want to look ridiculous and make gestures at my phone, I’ll just do it with my thumbs, or ask Siri to do it for me ;)

          • George

Yes u can send music with your Bluetooth only to an other iPhone send it to a Nokia can u no u have to connect your phone I don’t iso 7 is like android copy when the iPhone has gestures u will say it’s the best phone write and when it has 5 inch screen u will say about time the iPhone has not even go a light to flash to tell u miss call like I said the Samsung s3 has more

          • Fox Ray

I buy my music, I do not share it, it is illegal you know? But I C now that Android stand for illegal music, thanks for sharing that? The iPhone will never get gestures as it is a complete useless feature and I do honestly hope they do not make the screen bigger because it is big enough. And please dude get informed, the iPhone does have a flash light, jeez you are so un-informed.

          • George

U buy your music u only say that because u own Iphone has iPhone got a light to tell u miss call flashing no when u play games do u use your iPad because the iPhone screen is to small look at home I have 2 iPads 3 iPhones and 1 samsung s4 the samsung wins sorry it’s illegal to copy the iso 7 like an android u must be un informed I have both

          • Fox Ray

I think you missed the point where I actually mentioned Spotify and iTunes radio, all the music the world has to offer. Do I have a light that flashes when I have a missed call? No I don’t have one, until now I have never even wondered if I needed that, how is it that your community expresses itself ‘creating a need that isn’t a real need?’. When I play games I do it on my 27″ screen, do you think it will be much more fun to do it on a S4? ^^ Oh but for those that actually do play games, I think they prefer the performance and graphics from the iPhone, check the benchmarks, even the old iPhone 5 beats the S4 ^^

So Android users say iOS 7 is ugly and they say it looks like Android :) so what you are saying is ‘Android is ugly’. But ofcourse Apple copies everything from Android, it’s a known fact that Steve Jobs was on the board of Google stealing all the secrets from Android while secretly working on iOS. Oh no it was Eric Smith who was on the board of Apple, my mistake ^^

          • George

Is it true that since Steve jobs has died that Apple has gone down hill.u can’t compare io7 with android .can u tell me from were apple buys the A7 chips for the iPhone and from were it buys the gorilla glass from and please give me a straight answer and stop spining bull shit okay will see who is informed now

          • Fox Ray

Dude honestly, Apple doesn’t buy the A7 chip, they have it fabricated by Samsung, there is very big difference, god you are ignorant. Hold old are you? 12?

          • George

They have it fabricated is it free or do they buy it .Apple and Samsung have many beefs with each other. But for now, it appears, Samsung is still manufacturing the A6 processor inside Apple’s flagship iPhone 5.
That’s the conclusion reached by UBM TechInsights, whose engineers have been carefully disassembling the iPhone 5 since it launched Friday. Unlike other teardown teams, TechInsight’s engineers don’t stop when they expose the circuit boards and chip packages inside the phone. These guys pried the A6 chip out, stripped off its cover, and have been carefully shaving it down, layer by layer, and examining it with electron microscopes.
“All signs point to Samsung doing the manufacturing,” TechInsights technical research manager Allan Yogasingam said in an email to VentureBeat. “Manufacturing semiconductors is like a fingerprint, as each process is unique to the fabrication facility, in this case Samsung’s 32nm process.afer all the bull shit u spin u got point and the glass is made by LG by the way I thought u were 12 years old with the answers u were giving me.Apple is making samsung a lot of profit with the chips.

          • Haris

Sorry dude but you fail :p

    • jboogie1289

And what does that comparison of the Porsche mean there?? I don’t get it as I look at both of my Porsche’s and think WOW!!! I never thought that after seeing the iPhail. C’mon guy!! I saw the Note 3 and said HOLY S#IT, now that’s an awesome smartphone.

      • George

I like the Porsche to put they always look the same like the iPhone and your write about the note 3

  • Nladybug

Can I also lock my Samsung s4 phone like the iPhone with my personalized code.

    • Josh

Of course you can just go into:

Settings>My Device>Lock Screen>Screen Lock and select PIN from the options they give you.

  • deepen03

and the iPhone just got OWNED once again. loving my S4, so happy I sold my iPhone 5 to get it in April!

    • Josh

Me too!! Actually sold mine in August to get my S4. This is head and shoulders above the iPhone. Like it’s not even funny. I was honestly worried that the 5 display on the S4 would be too big for me. Hahaha boy was I wrong now when I was helping my friend fix a problem on his iPhone 5, it dawned on me that this thing feels like a little kid’s toy now in my hands.

      • Koko

        Oh really?
Be careful dear when u put GS4 in ur pocket that the screen dont smash hhhhh

Oh wait sorry the new google os might not support ur device u need to sell or do it illegally hhhhh

  • MCLiveAndroid

I love it when apple zombies get their panties in a twist. Why is it they all think Apple is the say all be all? I have both a iphone 4s (retired) and a galaxy s4 which I am currently using. The S4 is hands down the best phone I have ever owned. The new iPhone 5s is nice, and the jump to 64 bit is awesome! However with only 1 gig of RAM can not really shine when it comes to higher performing games. I am assuming Apple rushed this to the 5s as Samsung would have beat them to it next spring with the S5 with over 2 gigs of ram currently in the S4. The 64bit will be much better on the iPhone 6 when Apple launches it with more RAM than the standard 1 GIG they normally use. Oh and the 5c should only be purchased for a child who needs a cheap phone. No tech savy person should buy this as a upgrade over the 5. Gimmick.

    • Koko

Hhhh i dont know when u guys stop shitting around
Dude take a look at benchmark above
      Say bye to GS4
      8 cors my ass hhhh

      • hari

absolutely true .. thr r now better processors .. snapdragon 800 and a7

I would just like to say, as a current iPhone 4 owner I am extremely interested in the 5s as an upgrade. I was initially skeptical going to an “Android Authority” website for information on an Apple product. However, I must commend you on a very fair and factually informative article. Thank you!

I went from iphone4 to s3 thinking I loved apple.. After one day the iphone screen, speed and basically everything seemed inferior to the s3, and I would suspect the same would be found with s4 vs 5s.

Except that the iPhone 5 is at parity with the S3, making that an unfair comparison. Seems to me the 5s performs more efficiently than the S4. What I’m seeing is it basically comes down to which company’s smartphone’s gimmicks you prefer.

blind people’s do comparison between S4 vs iphone 5s..
5s too far behind. Xiaomi phones more better than iphone 5s..do not mess around with Lord of smartphones (GS4).

I thought it was very funny when the article said that ios7 looked like android!

    • RV

I think it’s very funny how some fandroids are claiming that the iOS7 looks “childish” and “unprofessional”. It’s like no matter what Apple does, they’re always wrong. Either their OS looks like Android, or their OS doesn’t look like Android but looks childish. Make up your mind.

I like how there are two sentences about apples much faster chip and a paragraph about excusing Samsung dated chip

  • androidSucks

Locked down approach? This is why the Apple ecosystem always has the best apps way before their Android counterparts are released? The reason Apple is diligent is because apps are written in Obj-C whereas a large majority of Android is Java. There is simply no comparison in terms of speed and responsiveness. All of this is why my aging Iphone 4 still keeps up with the crowd after owning it for 3 years. Know of any Android phones that can say the same?

    S4 is way better

what really pisses me off is that on the camera of the galaxy s4 it also has a 10 frames p/s mode and even a 1/8 fps BUT NOONE WHO REVIEWS IT REALIZES THAT! and they give apple the credit for a samsung invention!!!!!!!!!

  • BenChevy

The iPhone 5s actually has a 1.3ghz cpu. Compare it to the galaxy note 3, with its 2.3ghz quad core cpu, and 3gb ram. Unstoppable.

  • I’d still buy S4, why? Both of them have almost the same features but S4 is more affordable.
