It's a user interface feature that we've come to accept as part of the everyday design language of mobile, but now it's finally coming to Instagram.

Soon it looks like pinching an Instagram picture or video on your Android device will actually do something. Although this ability is already available on iOS, pinch-to-zoom functionality now appears to be just a week or two away from arriving on Android.

It’s a UI feature we’re used to on practically every other app and on our browsers, so it arriving on the world’s largest photo sharing social media platform is kind of a no brainer.

“Dive into an adorable puppy’s smile or into every detail of your friend’s new shirt,” Instagram stated in a blog post. The company announced the introduction of the feature on Wednesday, Aug. 31, and said then that pinch-to-zoom would arrive on its Android app “in the coming weeks.”

It’s far from a revolutionary feature, but it’s sure to please Instagram’s millions of daily users. In case you lost track, Instagram is now home to a staggering 300 million daily users and half a billion monthly visitors.

I for one have found myself attempting to use this pinch to zoom feature in the past only to be puzzled by a lack of response from the picture I was looking at. This update will bring a natural design element that has been lacking for some time.
