Google sells a mere 20K Nexus One handsets in the first week of sales?

According to mobile analytics firm Flurry, the Google Nexus One has not taken the world by storm. The latest Android offering has just passed the one week mark and estimates based upon web traffic data suggest that Google has sold a paltry 20,000 Nexus One handsets. When compared to other major handset launches, the Nexus One lags behind the myTouch, the DROID, and the iPhone which sold 60,000, 250,000, and 1.6 million handsets, respectively, in each phone’s first week of sales. Some of the lag in Nexus One sales may be attributed to the timing of the device’s release which fell at the beginning of CES, the world’s largest consumer electronics show, and the lack of aggressive advertising on the part of Google. So what does all this mean for Google and its Nexus One? Is it a reflection that the US not ready for an unlocked, unsubsidized device or is the Nexus One merely slow out the gate and will soon gain some much needed momentum?

  1. Perhaps Google is purposely not advertising, such as to test and adjust their infrastructure and service channels. I find it odd that the relatively clumsy Droid would be more interesting than the sleek N1, but I suppose that depends on the eye of the beholder.

  2. Why would they advertise? So people can go to the website and discover the phone costs $529… and if they want it subsidized they have only one choice of carrier and that choice includes only one choice of plan at 500 minutes a month? There isn’t even a mention of T-Mobile Even More Plus plans which seem perfectly designed for this phone. What a disasterous launch!

  3. Agreed, this is no the way to go against Apple iPhone
