General Mobile DSTL1 powered by Android Cupcake, on sale in U.S. and Turkey in June

General Mobile DSTL1

General Mobile just contacted us and has informed us that it plans on offering its dual-SIM Android powered DSTL1 smartphone for sale in the U.S. and Turkey at the end of June.

The DSTL1 will be running the Android 1.5 (Cupcake) OS and features a 624MHz CPU, dual-SIM capability, a 5 megapixel camera with flash (made by Sony), and one of Sharp’s resistive touchscreen displays (WQVGA resolution, probably 400×240 pixels).  An FM radio, Bluetooth 2.0, and WiFi are also on board, and it provides 4GB of storage capacity thanks to an included microSD card (16GB cards supported).  A leather case, an extra battery, and a desktop charger are also said to be included.

The tri-band GSM/EDGE phone is currently configured for 900/1800/1900MHz support, but the company plans on having a version that supports the U.S. 850MHz band at some point as well (though perhaps not at initial launch).

The phone is expected to sell for somewhere in the US$550 to $750 range, depending on the market and taxes and such.  No carrier deals have been announced yet, but we were told that Russia and Germany are the next two markets planned after the Turkey and the U.S.

While we’re waiting for more, though, you can see the device in a live video after the jump or click over to our prior story, which features a photo gallery of the DSTL1.

  16. Didn’t the guy say in the video that it would sell for lower that $500 us dollars? Why are you reporting $550 – $750? I’m confused :-)

  17. I’m reporting that because that is what General Mobile told me. We didn’t shoot that video.

All I get from them when I attempt to request a pre-order of the phone (which it is now July 1st) is the following generic response. I have made several inquiries, never do they address what I say in the email they always reply with the same copy n paste response. urgggrrr! Has ANYONE got ANYWHERE with them???

  22. Date: Wednesday, July 1, 2009, 7:58 AM

  25. Still not on sale here. I get the same response as i posted above on july 1st. if it’s on sale where you are, how can i get one? are they online somewhere??

  26. Still not able to get one of these phones, anyone else??

  27. I don’t know about anybody else, but they replied to me on 7/29 stating this:

    “Dear Sir/Madam,

Your pre-orders will be provided as soon as General Mobile DSTL1 Android mobile phone will be available in GSM markets that is 08/08/2009. And next week, you will get a response for your DSTL1 pre-order, with priority delivery and a discount.

Thanks for your great patience, we will get back to you very soon.

Please do not hesitate to ask if you have further questions. We would be glad to help you.

    Thanks and Best Regards
    General Mobile”

But I haven’t heard from them since and they are no longer replying to my emails or phone calls. When I call them, it goes to an answering service I found out. Seems kind of shotty to me, and very unprofessional to ignore my emails when they said it would be available on the 8th. Anyone have any luck???

  28. smoke and mirrors IMO
