A new HUAWEI-branded device, rumored to be the Mate S2, has been spotted passing through TENAA, China’s telecom regulator and the equivalent of the US’ FCC, that looks quite similar to the Nexus 6P launched last year.

Last year, HUAWEI made history by becoming the first Chinese manufacturer to launch a Nexus device in collaboration with Google when it produced the flagship Nexus 6P, while LG manufactured the Nexus 5X. After selling more than 100 million smartphones last year, HUAWEI has already launched a number of interesting devices this year, including the HONOR 8 smartphone.

With a little more than four months to go before this year ends, the company still isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Word on the street is that the company could soon introduce a successor to the Mate S, which was launched last year but didn’t really take off as expected. Our first glimpse of what is rumored to be the Mate S2 on TENAA shows that it looks identical to the Nexus 6P, except for the missing front-facing speakers and its bottom speaker being replaced by HUAWEI’s branding.

Another difference is the power button positioned below the volume rocker in the Mate S2, whereas the volume rocker sits below the power button on the right edge in the Nexus 6P. A black camera strip housing the rear camera sensor and LED flash can also be seen in the device, along with a round-shaped fingerprint sensor located just below the strip.

Despite its close resemblance to the Nexus 6P, the Mate S2 is expected to feature completely different specs. According to rumors, the HUAWEI Mate S2 will feature a 5.5-inch full HD Force Touch display and will be powered by its homegrown HiSilicon Kirin 960 64-bit octa-core SoC, paired with 4GB of RAM. The device is expected to sport a 16MP rear camera and an 8MP front facing shooter, with a non-removable 3,500mAh battery to keep it running.

HUAWEI hasn’t given any official indication that the Mate S2 exists, but considering its appearance on TENAA, we can safely assume that its getting ready to launch the smartphone pretty soon.
