Huawei phones are known for being affordable. They are also most often the first choice of many newcomers to the Android platform. The Huawei M835 is one such device that is priced at reasonable rates. The Huawei M835 runs on a single-core 528 MHz processor with a 2.8-inch touchscreen and is powered by Android 2.2 Froyo.
Released a long time ago, the Huawei M835 is already an aging device that is only a quarter of the processing power of many dual-core devices. However, the phone can still be enhanced by gaining root privileges. Newbies who are relatively new to the world of Android might ask what rooting can do. For starters, rooting can unlock the full potential of your phone so you can install custom ROMs and scripts, and even overclock your device to make it faster. If you got your Huawei M835 through MetroPCS, you’d know that the carrier has overloaded your phone with useless, junk apps that you can remove easily if your phone had root access.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps for rooting your Huawei M835 and installing a custom recovery on your phone.

- Download and install the ROM Manager app to your phone.
- Launch ROM Manager.
- Tap on “Flash ClockworkMod Recovery.”
UltraJack Recovery
UltraJack Recovery is a custom recovery for your phone. It is based on AmonRA recovery, another popular custom recovery, just like ClockworkMod Recovery.
There are two methods for installing UltraJack Recovery: direct install and via ROM Manager.
Direct Installation
- Download the UltraJack Recovery ZIP file from here (UltraJack-Recovery_v6.2.2.zip, 5.84 MB) and save it to your PC.
- Extract the contents of the ZIP file into a folder on your computer.
- Switch off your Huawei M835.
- Boot the phone into bootloader mode by pressing and holding down the Power, Volume Down, and End (red) buttons for about 6-10 seconds until you reach the Huawei Logo splash screen.
- Connect your Huawei M835 to your PC via USB cable. (If you notice your phone staying at the splash screen, don’t panic–this is normal.)
- On your PC, go to the folder where you extracted the UltraJack files to.
- If you’re on Windows, double-click install-recovery-windows.bat to flash the recovery image to your phone.
- Your phone will reboot after the recovery image has been flashed.
- Disconnect your phone from your PC after the phone has rebooted.
Installation via ROM Manager
- Install a file manager app on your phone (e.g., ASTRO File Manager, ES File Explorer, Root Explorer, and the like).
- Follow the instructions for installing ClockworkMod Recovery on your phone.
- Launch your file manager app.
- Navigate to /sdcard/clockworkmod/koushik/download/recoveries.
- Inside that directory, you should find a recovery image named recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-pulsemini.img (could be different on your phone).
- Rename the said recovery image by adding .bak at the end of the file name. Thus, recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-pulsemini.img becomes recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-pulsemini.img.bak.
- Download the UltraJack Recovery ZIP file from here (UltraJack-Recovery_v6.2.2.zip, 5.84 MB) and save it to your PC.
- Extract the contents of the ZIP file into a folder on your computer. Inside the extraction folder, you’ll find a file named UltraJack-Recovery_v6.2.2.img.
- Rename UltraJack-Recovery_v6.2.2.img to recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-pulsemini.img (or to whatever the original file name of the recovery image you found in /sdcard/clockworkmod/koushik/download/recoveries).
- Copy the renamed UltraJack recovery image to /sdcard/clockworkmod/koushik/download/recoveries.
- Exit your file manager app on your phone.
- Launch ROM Manager again.
- Tap on “Flash ClockworkMod Recovery.” The app will flash the renamed UltraJack recovery image you copied to your phone instead of ClockworkMod Recovery.
Congratulations! You have successfully rooted your Huawei M835 and installed a custom recovery image on your phone.
