HTC is on a mission to convince you that its latest flagship smartphone, the Android-powered HTC One, is the one and only smartphone that you will ever need. And it intends to accomplish this with the aid of American actor James Van Der Beek, who is most famous for playing the lead role in the hit 90s TV show Dawson’s Creek. If you’re not convinced that HTC can do that, then you need to spend the next three and a half minutes watching a video of an HTC-sponsored parody ad. Perhaps it will change your mind.

In the video, James Van Der Beek is shown as the host of a dating show that focuses on a “lucky bachelorette” named Cara that is given the chance to choose the man of her dreams. Only the men in her pool of suitors are actually phones, and the HTC One is among them. It’s also pretty clear that the host himself is really into Cara, even asking if he can call her “Care Bear” at some point.

Where HTC got the idea to cook up an entire dating show parody ad for its flagship Android phone, we have no clue. But at least it shows us that its marketing department is thinking. Obviously, not very hard — surely there are plenty of other ways to showcase the HTC One’s features without having to resort to the whole “the one” trope — but as the old saying goes, it’s the thought that counts.

As for whether or not HTC achieves what it likely set out to do with this parody ad, well, we’ll let you be the judge of that. Check out the video in question below.
