HTC employee alludes at Google experience device, executive denies it

samsung galaxy s4 vs htc one one back aa

With the Google Experience Samsung Galaxy S4 being announced at Google I/O, HTC obviously felt a need to answer back. In typical, brash, 2013 HTC style, HTC employee Leigh Momii tweeted a not so subtle jab at the Galaxy S4 and it’s choice of build materials, calling it a piece of plastic running stock Android.

Right after the news broke, Jeff Gordon a Senior Global Online Communications Manager at HTC, released a statement saying, “HTC is not currently planning a ‘Nexus Edition’ of the HTC One.”

So if you were hoping for an all metal Nexus-like smartphone, it appears as if those hopes have been dashed. Of course, just because HTC isn’t planning a “Nexus Edition” currently, it doesn’t mean it can’t change its tune. It wouldn’t be the first time a company used the ploy, so we are keeping our fingers (and our toes) firmly crossed.

Would you be interested in an HTC-made “Google experience” device? Would you pick a Google Experience HTC One over a Google Experience Samsung Galaxy S4? Let us know in the comments.

The IO did mention the HTC One before announcing the GS4 Nexus, maybe… just maybe

    • CHRIS

give me the GE S4!!! NOW!

    • dandroid13

HTCrap is so bad that even Google doesn’t care abot them anymore.

    • fixxmyhead

htcrap are a bunch of babies

      • Jrodd

Are you a student hired by Samsung to say such things? just kidding :)

Honestly even if you don’t like your competitors products you shouldn’t say it out loud all the time it’s kind of a bad Idea. Maybe in ads but not just saying it to say it.

        • dandroid13

The press is full of HTCrap fanboys that make articles to trick undecided people think HTCrap devices are better than Sony, LG, Sammy… Just because it looks better, typical of flashy americans by the way.

Body and Design, point to HTC. The rest, Samsung.

      • Sholih Rmd

what about audio? and low-light photography?

    • Nacos

Was hardly debating whether I should get the S4 (coming from Note 2) and after putting everything in balance the conclusion was to stay away from it. At the time it was just not worth considering the investment. Not anymore though; this sudden announcement changes everything. An AOSP prime device with removable battery and external SD is quite a premiere.

F**k HTC, irrelevant brand and former top dogs that have been relegated to nobodies.

HTC fucked up the bottom button system. So yeah Samsung for sure.

      • Nickan Fayyazi

So did Samsung. In fact Samsung made it worse by explicitly disobeying Google’s design spec for Android.

    • Ruzveh

yea i would be the most interested one

      • Jared Persinger

Well, everybody else here seems to find it necessary to bash htc, I’m glad someone else here isn’t

    • Jrodd

What sucks is that Google and manufacturers should make it so anyone can use stock android. We need to get this driver thing figured out so one OS can work on any phone. And yes they should have a google built release that does this.

    • http://www.facebook.com/dusan.doroski Dusan Doroski

Not buying Samsung unless they get rid of that ugly plastic look and the physical bottom button. It can have 10 times faster performance than the next fastest thing, would still say no to it. It’s THAT ugly.

    • SiriusScaper

I would definitely want a HTC One Google Edition!

      • icyrock1

        Here here! I’ll take two!

      • CiMO

Only if they change the power button to the side. I’ve returned HTC One and got GS4 because of the HTC Sense and the power button.

    • MasterMuffin

S4 Nexus is the Nexus everyone’s been looking for. Removable battery, sd card slot, beautiful AMOLED… US ONLY!?!?

      • Jared Persinger

Well… I didn’t know that it was US only

        • asakura

google play = like 5 countries, pretty much fked up marketing

      • http://www.facebook.com/BJ.van.Beethoven Ben Edwards

That’s only initially though. Samsung have done this for a reason – to gain more sales. They won’t want to limit that by only offering the phone through the Play Store, in a month it will be available from most retailers world wide.

      • cycad007

        Removable battery & SD card…yes, I agree

beautiful AMOLED? I think HTC One carries the superior display.

        • MasterMuffin

Well that’s your opinion and that’s fine

        • AndroidShiz

It does. Would never buy it cause I like stock Android only, and Sense and TW suck lizard balls, but when you do side by side, the HTC display looks more real in color and seems to almost make things look to float on top of the screen. I’d take a 32gb 1. Same case for the HTC One X vs S3 except the 1 looks even better than the X. Of course this is coming from someone that’s owned about 35 Androids.

      • Nickan Fayyazi

        “beautiful AMOLED”

That’s the most contradictory statement I’ve ever seen.

        • http://www.facebook.com/raaj978 Raaj Ra

Then probably you need to update yourself more. Revisit AA pages a from a couple weeks back and then after, you can post your new comment “contradicting” your old comment :D

      • Nickan Fayyazi

        And it isn’t US only…

    • Rath Mam

HTC ONE is a piece of scrap metal.

    • cycad007

If HTC has something, I’m willing to wait & find out what it is.

    • Jordan Harris

I would love a Google edition htc phone or an htc nexus. Either works.

      • MasterMuffin

        Buy Nexus One :P

    • OMGgary

      HT who?

      • MariaxNY

        samesung who?

        • OMGgary

          Hi Mareia.

    • Guest

HTC One with Google Experience?!?!? Sounds Fap-worthy.

    • Cole Raney

I think all flagship devices should have this option. Stock android or android with companies ui

    • just me

If there were a petition, I would sign it and get the phone on day 1.

    • Damian Salvatto

Everyone’s sounding all excited about the GS4 with stock android and the majority aren’t even going to spend that money to go buy it.

      • gallen408

I think there is the precedent that it is setting that’s really exciting everyone.
I cant wait till VZW is all LTE and manufactures start selling multiband devices. :) Than we’ll finally be free to pick our device, OS, & network!
Not to mention having an AOSP GS4 means the AOSP code’s already out there, it’ll make the Cyanogen & AOKP team’s work so much easier!

    • Tom Rigodanzo

if you read responses to that tweet she says that she is just alluding to new versions of sense that are mind blowing or something. seriously all you had to do was read for 30 seconds

    • MSmith79

Would be perfect for HTC since it would be the only way to force them to release an Android update. My Thunderbolt just got off Gingerbread

    • TheMimic12

What does this mean? Usually we got one Nexus a year, but does this mean that we’re getting a Nexus plus flagship Android models with vanilla android?
This is the great part of Android

    • edgar

“so you can pay $649 for a piece of plastic running stock or you can wait”

      yeah I choose wait.
I’ll wait for HTC flagship that has sdcard slot, removable battery, and excellent battery life.

      • RussianDroid

I don’t think this will happen.

HTC and Google are not interested in sdcard slots. HTC is staying away from removable batteries for a while now.

Personally I really don’t care for removable batteries. I’ve had moto and htc phones and for my lifestyle non-removable battery works just fine. Yes I have phone chargers in the office, cars and at home.

No sdcard is no issue for me as long as i have 32GB+ of storage.

    • MariaxNY

the only nexus i would buy is htc yes i would buy a nexus if its made by HTC Quality inside and out.

    • Anirudh

Remember sony xperia S AOSP project ? Guess Sony also has forgotten.

    • http://www.facebook.com/sky.metallic Sky Baun

      htc! just do it!

    • Sholih Rmd

leigh wasn’t referring to a stock version of HTC One, but she was referring to the new Sense in Android 4.2.2

    • Dart

I’d buy a stock experience HTC One. That would be sweet.

Guaranteed updates from Google on that hardware would be a huge win. Maybe someday.

I want someone in the states to send me one up to Canada :)
