HTC’s full-length Robert Downey Jr. ad leaked and posted online [Updated]

HTC first tried its hand at making a funny commercial back in April of this year, when it released an ad that was a parody of reality shows a la The Bachelor and The Bachelorette starring Hollywood actor James Van Der Beek. They tried, but did they succeed? Questionable. And now, the Taiwan-based smartphone maker is at it again.

A couple of days ago, we told you about HTC’s plans to go all out with a $1 billion ad campaign that included Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. They gave us a teaser, and let us know that the ad campaign will involve taking the company name — that is, HTC — and making up ridiculous sounding phrases. This is to illustrate the fact that HTC can mean anything you want. HTC, with this ad campaign, will come to be anything that you want it to be.

The idea sounds promising, and a lot of people have since excitedly looked forward to what HTC’s full commercial will look like. Well, we finally have a copy of that same commercial, and we can’t quite say that it’s up to snuff.

The full HTC commercial with Robert Downey Jr. lasts a minute and 45 seconds, and shows several of the possible phrases that can be coined with the letters H, T, and C. Hold This Cat is one of them, as is Hipster Troll Carwash.

So is it comedy? We’ll let the commercial speak for itself. One thing we know is, even though HTC didn’t mention it, the phrase “Have This Cringe” certainly fits in the list of phrases used throughout this commercial. Take a look and see for yourself.

Update: here’s the official video, which just went up:

    Best one I’ve seen:
    Help This Company

  • mac cpro

    One word awesome

  • End in sight

Oh my. That is so dumb. What ad agency did they hire? That firm should be fired.

It seems they are trying to create a brand around their initials. Bad idea. I mean, Samsung doesn’t create a brand around the meaning of “Samsung”.

    HTC ads are lol.

hahaha lols, they should hire u instead :D

If that ad told me anything its only how troubled and lost they are, do they expect people to overlook their device weaknesess and buy them out of mercy/pity, is that it?

        • Kash Gummaraju

          what device weaknesses?

  • cra

    horribly troubled company

    god help this company

    looks like they’re wasting money

    • OMGgary

I agree. This ad campaign is a bit too bonkers. Even if people know who RDJ is, it tells them squat about these phones they expect the public to buy.

At first look this Ad looks horrible at first glance and it is somehow, but in terms of effect it’s just brilliant! the goal is to rise the awarnass of the Brand (the average joe doesn’t know about HTC he knows Samsung, Apple but HTC??) this Ad is one of those stupid ads that you can’t forget and can’t help thinking about it content

  • brendan soliwoda

Not a bad commercial. I mean, I certainly find it more entertaining than either of Samsung’s or Apple’s commericals although HTC doesn’t showcase their products or features at all.

    • Amine Elouakil

It will in the future, the first step is to raise awarness of the brand, while showing products and some of the exclusive features to move on to more specific ads related to products, I think by the One Max release you’ll start seeing those

  • The Pimptard

    Hate this crap.

  • Stiego

Leaked my ass. This was intentional
