HTC DROID Eris OTA firmware updates starting

HTC DROID Eris

HTC DROID Eris

Verizon sent us a message last night telling us about the new HTC DROID Eris firmware update that has started going out to users.  This isn’t an update to a newer version of Android, which we are still expecting, but rather a simpler update that fixes some problems with the initial version of the device.

Not all people experienced all of these issues, but there’s probably something in this update for most any DROID Eris user.

The initial batch of users to get the update is pretty small, but it should start going out in large scale within a week or so.  A list of the updated aspects of the DROID Eris are available after the jump.

  • While on a call and the device is in screensaver mode, pressing the End key now takes the device out of screensaver mode, and a second press will end the call.
  • On-call mute and speakerphone icon functionality is enhanced.
  • Upgraded functionality after activation eliminates the delay users were experiencing in receiving their first call.
  • Device now switches effectively from 1x mode to 3G.
  • Device no longer requires users to reselect a default email after power-cycling.
  • SMS and MMS messaging delivery is improved.
  • Eighty-character MMS/SMS message subject lines are now allowed.
  • Improved picture messaging functionality allows messages from LG phones to be opened.

i got the update and it basically bricked my phone – can’t unlock the screen. it’s like the touch screen has ceased to function. yeah, that’s a real great improvement there.

  • Bryan

With the update you actually have to touch and pull down the lock bar on the lock screen. It’s weird, but you can’t pull anywhere on the screen anymore. Try this and see if it works…I hope you phone isn’t bricked!!!

ah yes, that works. thanks. i’d previously figured out i could push the “menu” button to unlock it. hadn’t used that functionality before since the swipe was so easy. i suppose they changed the swipe ’cause it was too easy to unlock – i’d added an unlock code ’cause i was making too many pocket calls. now i think i can take that off!

Anybody know what the current version of the software is supposed to be?
My current firmware version still shows as 1.5 and I thought it was supposed to be higher than that.
    Just curious.
    thanks,
    joe

Still supposed to be 1.5…Waiting for the 2.xx update in quarter 1, WHICH ENDS TODAY. We’ll see I guess what happens but nobody seems to know when this is going to happen.
