Whoever says a Honeycomb tablet is only useful for work or for browsing the Web has probably never tried playing games on one. With Android tablets powered by NVIDIA Tegra 2 processors, the Honeycomb-based gaming experience can only be described as sweet–yet even that is an understatement. Although the list of games for Honeycomb tablets is still growing, quite a handful stand out.

We have handpicked 5 Honeycomb game apps that we feel should be staple installations on every Android gamer’s tablet. All five are optimized for a wonderful gaming experience on a Honeycomb tablet with Tegra 2 onboard. These games, though, have also been successfully run on non-Tegra and non-Honeycomb Android tablets and smartphones with varying degrees of success.

The 5 games we feature in this post will take you on an exhilarating jetski ride (Riptide GP), a manhunt motivated by revenge (Samurai II: Vengeance THD), a cartoonish guerrilla mission (Guerrilla Bob THD), a medieval war for Crown and Country (HISTORY Great Battles Medieval), and an intergalactic quest to eliminate a domineering alien race (Galaxy on Fire 2 THD). Read on for our quick review of each game (arranged in no particular order).

    Riptide GP

You’ve heard of games that satisfy your lust for speed on land and air. This one’s for water. Riptide GP takes you on a hair-raising jetski race through waterways, and treats you with awesome views of cityscapes that seem to be possible only years from now, as well as research facilities veiled in mystery. You will need dexterity and speed to slice the water towards victory. Optimized for tablets with the NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, Riptide GP takes advantage of the NVIDIA processor’s amazing graphics ability to provide you with realistic visuals. Is that sea spray on your face? It might as well be, especially with the game’s ability to mimic real-life behavior of water. (But, that liquid on your face is probably your sweat.) Go ahead, rip the tide and go for the win.

Get it from the Android Market:

    Samurai II: Vengeance THD

Witness Daisuke hack and slash his enemies with the fluid slicing swing of his samurai sword–with 60-fps smoothness (on all Tegra 2 devices, at least). Samurai II: Vengeance THD brings you on a hunting trail for Orochi, the game’s protagonist’s archenemy, from a seaside village, to a flying fortress, and on to the Isle of the Dead. Only one purpose is on his heart: vengeance. This game is optimized for NVIDIA Tegra 2 tablets, and that’s the chief reason for the fantastic visuals, which the game developers themselves claim to be even better than the version for iOS. As a samurai warrior, you have to always carry a sharp mind as you weave through environment puzzles, detect and avoid traps, and fetch items to help you in your quest. Strength and agility are important, too, and you can easily accumulate them with health upgrades and attack combos.

Get it from the Android Market:

    Guerrilla Bob THD

Arm yourself with machine guns, time bombs, Molotov cocktails, shotguns, double UZIs, flamethrowers, rocket launchers, grenade launchers, sticky bows, and chain guns as you fight enemies the guerrilla way. Another game optimized for Tegra 2 tablets, Guerrilla Bob THD guarantees explosive battles in a story where you can fight for fame or fortune, or just to stay alive, through deep canyons, lifeless deserts, and fearsome towns. There’s no other way to enjoy this fast-paced, cartoony shooting game except on an Android tablet (although it runs quite well on many phones), for that’s what this game was designed for. Blast those enemies away, Bob.

Get it from the Android Market:

    HISTORY Great Battles Medieval

Many of history’s most epic wars occurred during the Middle Ages, one of which was the so-called Hundred Years’ War lasting 116 years between England and France. This game takes you back in time to that period that greatly changed medieval warfare weaponry and tactics, and you have your own a huge army at your command. Played on a tablet powered by NVIDIA Tegra 2, HISTORY Great Battles Medieval makes the Hundred Years’ War come alive on your Honeycomb tablet, complete with accurately researched and vivid details of war equipment, battle units, and scenes. Do you have what it takes to win this War for your king and your country?

Get it from the Android Market:

    Galaxy on Fire 2 THD

A sci-fi game that will test your loyalty to your home galaxy, Galaxy on Fire 2 THD pits you against alien enemies that threaten your home galaxy as you take the role of space explorer-turned-defender Keith T. Maxwell. Take your battles across 20 solar systems–all rendered in incredibly 3D realism, courtesy of optimization for NVIDIA Tegra 2 processors. Fight for your galaxy for free with the no-cost version of Galaxy on Fire 2 THD from the Android Market, although your thirst for alien blood will not be fully quenched after fighting enemies in only one solar system. An in-app upgrade system allows you to unlock more solar systems and space stations for a fee. Are you ready to put out the fire in a galaxy set aflame by alien species?

    Final Note

There are other great games for Honeycomb tablets, but you shouldn’t start gaming on your Android tablet without trying out the 5 game apps we feature here. The speed of NVIDIA Tegra 2 (for which these featured games have been optimized) and the high-definition visuals in these featured games will bring nothing less than gaming pleasure to every Android gamer’s heart.

Good list and it’s really needed. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it’s hard to find anything decent in the market.

Just created an app specifically for the Honeycomb tablet and realized it is next to impossible to get it noticed in the Android Market. Just the nature of how the Android Market is setup is a huge disadvantage to tablet developers, because of the downloads and reviews will be limited and thus will almost always be too low in the search order to get noticed. It is too bad because Honeycomb developers generally put a lot more effort in creating quality apps than light apps for the phone. This is really going to discourage a lot of small tablet developers as not all apps get lucky enough to get noticed and reviewed like this.

Anyhow, here is my honeycomb game that does not seem to have a lot whole of luck at the market. https://market.android.com/search?q=pub%3AAppy+Fun&so=1&c=apps.

It is actually a pretty nice game, maybe over time people will notice.
