Here’s how big the Xperia Z Ultra really is

Which one’s the phone and which is the tablet?

It’s a bit hard to visualize the size of a device without seeing it in real life, or even better, handling it for a couple of minutes, so I always appreciate comparisons between new devices and popular devices that virtually everyone can use as a reference.

With its 6.4-inch screen, the Sony Xperia Z Ultra pushes the boundaries of what we collectively define as smartphones. Yeah, it makes calls, so you can still claim it’s a phone when you pull it out of your pocket to the awe of your friends. But with just 0.6 inch, or a little over 15 millimeters, separating the Z Ultra from a 7-inch tablet like the Nexus 7 (2013), it’s increasingly hard to think of Sony’s gorgeous piece of electronics as a smartphone.

Without further ado, the folks at, a Chinese gadget site, got their hands on both the Xperia Z Ultra and the Nexus 7 (2013) and made them pose for the camera. Here are a few samples:

So, what is it for you? Do you think of the Xperia Z Ultra as a smartphone or as a tablet?

  • Balraj

    A mini tablet ? Lol
    Big device are epic fail..
Putting great hardware in a small package requires brilliant engineering maybe every oem are trying the easier way
These big device craze will die soon !!!!!
    It’s a passing phase ;-)

    • Gorga Naibaho

Not really. Just think of it as a slightly smaller tablet that can still make phone calls. I always see these bigger devices, including the tablets, as a companion device where you can use them mostly when you need a bigger screen to work with. With their bigger batteries, they can also serve as backup devices, and I’ve been using them like that too.

      • Balraj

But still it won’t get into my pocket

        • Gorga Naibaho

Well I never put my tablet into my pockets, and being a 5 inch phone user, some of those phones can hardly fit into pockets, too. Sony themselves seem to have thought about this as they heavily touted the SBH52 accessory as the perfect pairing for this device, as it allows you to use basic phone functions without ever taking it out of the bag.

        • Leonardo Rojas

It’s not meant to go in a pants pocket you shorty. It can easily go in a belt case. -.-

          • Balraj

Ok that’s one way but that is mini tablet, not a phone

        • Gas_Huffer

Yes it will dumbass, look at the picture right above you.

    • rabidhunter

My brother-in-law would have got this had it been on VZW. He wanted to play around on a tablet but didn’t want to have both a phone and tablet.

I think it is trying to communicate

      That’s spam.

But fuck, your review is awesome dude.

    • APai

woah! the reviewer seems to be bigfoot / sasquatch! even the Z ultra seems like a regular phone in his gigantic palm!

    • adora

      what a gorgeous device!
all other devices that you showed in the video were looking eyesore in front of this! Amazing!

  • venorme

I would buy it but price is just too high
Still it`s great for Note series lovers and pover users.

    • K.

It’s a nice device but too big for me. I’ll wait for the honami i1.

  • john

Time to do more fore-arm exercises.

  • Johnathan Katz

Sweet zombie Jesus that thing is gigantic.

  • Ram

This is a great device if you’re home based worker, lol. In the end it all depends on the user :) IMHO!

  • Mochammad Santaka

“Is that an Xperia Z Ultra in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?”

    • Adam Eldin

      infinite upvotes

  • satsmine2k4

I am buying this one as soon as the C6806 model is available for sale.. can some one do a display comparison between this, the new nexus 7 and SGS 4 please…..

    • Leonardo Rojas

C6806? Is there another one? O.o

      • satsmine2k4

C6806 is the North America Variant of the Z Ultra. It sports the LTE bands of AT&T…

        • Leonardo Rojas

Oh, thanks. I hope we get one in Peru, soon.

  • Tran Nguyen

This device is fit for my pocket and this is a perfect phone for low vision impaired people like me

  • foggyflute

My aunt use fonepad without any trouble… people will get used to it.

  • Prashant

since last three days i am using xperia z ultra, its a handy smallest tablet or you can say biggest smartphone, its a amazing speedy device, i love to use it for my daily needs, specifically emails and browsing, email view is excellent like desktop.
i am very happy with the device, earlier i was using htc sensation xl.

  • turdbogls

I gotta say, I love large screens on these new phones, and I can easily fit my nexus 7 in my tightest pants (work pants) without it sticking out any…..but would i want to carry it around EVERY DAY? hardly.
I’ll stick to my 5″ devices.

  • Joshhud

thats just unnecessary. way too big

  • Andrew T Roach

    Not a phone.

  • Leonardo Rojas

If this had LED light I would have already forgotten about the Lenovo K900. But as Sony loves to have drawbacks it almost ruined the device for some thousands of people like me. I’ll have to wait and see u.u The one that reaches Peru first will be mine n.n I think.
    – L.

Pd: I like them precisely because they are big, plus; slim, pretty and powerful. Great n.n
