Hangouts HD

If your preferred method of keeping in touch with friends and family is video chat, Google has some great news for you. Starting today, Google will be rolling out an update to Hangouts, allowing for full HD video.

According to Chee Chew, the man in charge of Hangouts, the update will be rolling out slowly. From his Google+ post:

[quote qtext=”Connect with friends and family in high res with HD hangouts! We are rolling hd out to hangouts on air initially, then to all desktop hangout video calls over the next few weeks. HD hangouts require an hd-capable webcam, more bandwidth and more processing power than standard definition. So if your computer and network are capable, turn the quality up to HD!” qperson=”” qsource=”” qposition=”center”]

In addition to the ability to send and view video in full HD, the slider option for changing your video quality is a wonderful option. Not everyone has a higher speed internet connection, or a device that can adequately keep up with those demands.

Hangouts is fast becoming a wonderful option for teleconferencing, and HD should make a lot of Skype users take notice. Hangouts is easily used across platforms, and has no OS requirements. Hangouts is also a free service, which could save Skypers upwards of $20/month.

Free, easy to use, and now has HD video. Sounds like a whole bunch of ‘win’ to me!

Nice. All will depend of our network and computers to switch on/off for the HD version. Can wait….

The quality isn’t as consistent as Facetime even when using the same devices and networks but the features are infinitely better.

Are you talking about the new HD?

      • David Fleck

No, I haven’t see the update yet. Just commenting on the current state of hangouts. Looking forward to see the improvements.

but when will the voice call come to mobile???

  • ConCal

I wonder how much bandwidth you’ll need to archive HD? Any guesses?

  • im finding hangouts uses more bandwidth than facetime, and looks worse. i hope they optimize the codec in the future.

    • HitokiriX

looks worse? I dunno about that.

      • mrjayviper

        have you tried both?

It probably is… was worse… but the HD option will either bring it up to the same level or surpass it.

I wish they’d add Google voice to Hangouts before making it HD.
