hangouts drops xmpp support

Back in April Google brought us Hangouts 2.1, which promised an improved SMS experience. Unfortunately, it also seems that this update brought increased battery drain as a side effect. Reportedly the issue centers around excessive wakelocks, and it is believed that having a large number of saved conversations could be the culprit.

The good news is that Google seems to have acknowledged the problem via their product forums, and reportedly Google engineers have a possible fix in the works. While there’s no ETA on when exactly Google will provide a fix to the battery drain problem, it’s still great to see that Google is working to address it.

Thanks for your patience! The engineers believe they have found a fix! As soon as the fix is released I’ll let you know! Unfortunately, I wasn’t provided a timeline, so stay tuned!

In the meantime, one possible solution is to try downgrading to an older version of Hangouts. For those who haven’t upgraded to Hangouts v2.1 for whatever reason, you’re probably better off waiting. So how about it, experiencing any of these reported battery drain issues or is everything fine on your end?
