Experiencing battery drain issues with Hangouts 2.1+? Google is working on a fix

hangouts drops xmpp support

Back in April Google brought us Hangouts 2.1, which promised an improved SMS experience. Unfortunately, it also seems that this update brought increased battery drain as a side effect. Reportedly the issue centers around excessive wakelocks, and it is believed that having a large number of saved conversations could be the culprit.

The good news is that Google seems to have acknowledged the problem via their product forums, and reportedly Google engineers have a possible fix in the works. While there’s no ETA on when exactly Google will provide a fix to the battery drain problem, it’s still great to see that Google is working to address it.

Thanks for your patience! The engineers believe they have found a fix! As soon as the fix is released I’ll let you know! Unfortunately, I wasn’t provided a timeline, so stay tuned!

In the meantime, one possible solution is to try downgrading to an older version of Hangouts. For those who haven’t upgraded to Hangouts v2.1 for whatever reason, you’re probably better off waiting. So how about it, experiencing any of these reported battery drain issues or is everything fine on your end?

Everything fine, but I clear my conversations often so that may be the reason

Thank goodness. My Nexus 5 consumption has gone from (just about) all day to “where’s my charger” I like to keep my conversations because most are work related.

I still got Talk. Thank good too because i hate Hangouts. They made it as dislikable as Google +.

I love Google + ….. I use it more than any other app ……. it does it all!

Not I because I would never use hangouts. IMO it is the single worst thing Google did to android. Old School Messaging for me.

See, I feel the opposite. And that’s where we can’t be friends.

I don’t have any wakelock issues with hangouts.

Ok, just turned mine off; wasn’t using it anyway.

Did it only occur to Nexus owners? Didn’t clear my conversations from the very first time using it and battery seems fine

To be honest, living in a wold where i have to deal with iPhone users, Hangouts is like a godsend to me. Plus, I always liked the iMessage idea.. just.. hate iMessage cause it doesn’t work with ANY other os.

Hangouts is pretty great and… well. That’s my awesome opinion on it. :) (plus a lot of people switch to android cause i show them hangouts. And works pretty well with my girlfriend’s iphone. But some people just don’t like change, i get it. :D )
