Hangouts 1.2 rolling out now, introduces availability indicators and more

by: Andrew GrushSeptember 25, 2013

Earlier today, Google began rolling out a new version of Gmail, complete with a new card-like design for the conversation view, and a few other improvements. That’s far from the only Google app getting updated today, though. Hangouts 1.2 has now arrived as well!

Probably the most important change here is that green icons finally will show you who is on Hangouts, while gray indicate when someone isn’t around. Beyond that, there’s also some changes to the way contacts are organized and displayed, as well as a few other minor improvements.

For a full list of what to expect, check out the change log:

  • You can finally see who is on Hangouts! When you start a new Hangout, green icons show who’s on, and gray shows who’s not.
  • Contacts are now organized by People you Hangout with, Suggested People, and Other Contacts.
  • Long press contacts in the New Hangout screen to hide them.
  • Invites are now above your conversations so they’re easier to find.
  • Pinch-to-zoom photos!

In usual Google fashion, the new Google Hangouts update will rollout in stages, so it may still be a few more days before it reaches you. If you’d rather not wait, you can always grab the APK right here.

For those that have already upgraded, what do you think of the new changes? Any other new features or changes you’d like to see come to Google Hangouts?

Having had a little poke around, I’d love to see Google voice come to the UK, I can that being very useful to keep in touch with friends.

Wish they bring the SMS feature already. Stock messaging app doesnt look so nice xD

It’s a good update, but I’m still eagerly awaiting SMS integration. They said back at Google I/O that it was coming “soon”. If this is Google’s idea of “soon”, I’d hate to see their idea of “in the future”

why no “invisible” status ? why is google interested in forcing users online like facebook chat ? only 2 modes, on/offline ??
hangout video is very handy but it is pretty useless without the primary ability to show the status.

“Snooze Notifications” It’s been in there since inception.
the only difference from being invisible on google talk is you don’t get alerts when someone messages you– you have to look at the hangouts screen and see for yourself.

      • APai

it’s a massive inconvenience nevertheless. It was very convenient earlier – you could chose to respond if it was urgent. also, hangouts has becomes very unreliable with delivering messages – slow/ buggy.

I heard a report that there’s a bug, causing a single message to get sent to multiple people….

It’s still way behind an application like watsapp. Why can’t they just show people using hangouts instead of everyone in our contact list.
