Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

I got to spend a bit of time with the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android phone last night while in New York.  It is an interesting device, to be sure, but I have to be honest in saying that I’m not really feeling it.

The hardware is pretty, and the display is gorgeous, but the feel of the device (pre-production as it is), just feels too cheap.  And while I think Timescape and Mediascape are visually appealing, I don’t think it’s something I could really get into.  A regular 3-panel homescreen is also available, with regular widget support, but that’s certainly not what Sony Ericsson is pushing.

The device isn’t likely to hit store shelves for another couple of months yet, so there is still plenty of time for things to change and firm up.

In any case, watch the video and check out some of the photos, which are located after the jump.

I think if I didn’t get on with the UI, I would consider still using this devicewith some homescreen extensions :)

Why publish this video, it is useless and the person using the device knows very little about it. Not impressed with the speed nor the display. Wasted time without showing any features..on a scale of 1 to 10…-2!

I published it because some people find it of use. 2,000 people have watched it so far, and you are the only one to complain. I, for one, hadn’t used Timescape or Mediascape before, so it was of interest to me.

What is the port on the bottom for? Is it a charger port? If so, is charging through the USB port disabled? That would be a big turnoff for me. Having the USB on top is also awkward if you need to talk on the phone while the phone is connected via USB. Plus the USB connector doesn’t look standard like the G1.

I hope it doesn’t use a propriety Sony charger. Another turnoff.

I think the OS is way too different from Android for me to like it. I don’t even consider this Android. At least HTC Sense did a good job of retaining a lot of the overall Android feel. This really makes it seem like a different OS, and not for the better.

Nice hardware, but UI sucks. I would root and put Sense UI on there.
