A curious new movie pre-order feature has been introduced to Google Play users in the United States, allowing you to pay for upcoming movies ahead of their digital releases. Right now there are 15 movies to choose from including TMNT, 22 Jump Street and Guardians of the Galaxy.

The process for pre-ordering is pretty simple: you basically check out the list, hit the pre-order button on the movies you are interested in and follow through the checkout process. You’ll receive an email receipt and on the day the movie becomes available you’ll get another email alerting you that it’s ready. After that, it’s yours to watch.

Now maybe I’m totally missing something here, but I personally don’t get the appeal of this. You are pre-ordering a digital item, something that can’t run out, and based on the details provided there doesn’t seem to be any special incentives like reduced pricing or an earlier-than-normal release dates for the movies. Still, I suppose if you want to pre-order now so you’ll get the alert the second it’s ready to watch — there’s that.

What do you think, is the new digital movie pre-order something you’d find useful or not?
