Google / Motorola X Phone specs, features and image leaked ahead of Galaxy S4 launch

by: Chris SmithMarch 11, 2013

The Google / Motorola X Phone is a rumored Nexus-like-but-not-a-Nexus flagship smartphone that the Search giant is said to unveil at Google I/O in mid-May, and it looks like we have a new leak for you today detailing some of its specs and features but also showing us how the handset could look like.

The coincidence

Before we dive into the actual leaked hardware, let’s go back in time for a few moments, to recap some of the recent events in the mobile ecosystem starting with MWC 2013; events that could be relevant to today’s leak.

While the Galaxy S4 wasn’t officially part of the mobile show – although some rumors suggest the phone was unofficially present in Barcelona, Spain – it certainly did cast a long shadow over this year’s MWC edition via various leaks but also thanks to Samsung’s confirmation of the announcement of the March 14 New York-based Galaxy S4 media event. In case you forgot, Samsung issued the Galaxy S4 Unpacked event invitations right during MWC, further building anticipation for one of the hottest handsets of the year.

At the time, we speculated that this could be a well-coordinated attack from Samsung’s marketing department, or a serious attempt to generate extra buzz around the handset, at the expense of Samsung’s competitors that were displaying new hardware at MWC.

During the same show, we also heard that Google may have a serious problem with Samsung grabbing more and more market share from rival Android handset makers, right alongside most of the profits based on Android device sales, and we wondered whether the Galaxy S4 vs X Phone will be one of the battles for Android this year.

We ended up that particular article asking ourselves whether “Google [has] reason to crash Samsung’s Galaxy S4 party in the coming weeks and months with more X Phone rumors primed to hit the web on a more regular basis.” Such actions could potentially suggest that Google isn’t entirely happy with Samsung’s progress, even though officially Google has denied having a Samsung problem since that report appeared in the Wall Street Journal.

Well, call it a wild coincidence or not, but on the first day of the week the Galaxy S4 gets official, the X Phone made an appearance, specs, features and image included. Is Google making a move against Samsung?

The hot stuff

We have no way of knowing whether Google’s marketing team is indeed targeting Samsung with such leaks, so in the mean time let’s get right down to business and check out today’s Google / Motorola X Phone rumor!

According to AndroidWorld, an “anonymous tipster” sent the publication details about the X Phone, so here’s what the device could offer, once it becomes official:

  • 4.7-inch Full HD display
  • NVIDIA Tegra 4i processor
  • 16-megapixel camera
  • 5-megapixel front-facing camera which also serves as a light sensor with eye scrolling features
  • dimensions: 131.2 x 66.7 x 7.9 mm

Obviously, we’re taking everything with a grain of salt here, because there’s no way to confirm the hardware or the leaked image right now. But again, it’s worth pointing out that the X Phone rumors have started to appear in time to somehow attempt to ruin Samsung’s party this week.

Interestingly, assuming the specs above are based on the real deal, the device does not feature a 5-inch Full HD display as most 2013 flagship devices will have to offer. Instead we’re looking at a 4.7-inch display, which would put the device on par with the HTC One and the rumored Xperia C670 (although the latter is said to sport a 4.8-inch display).

Also interesting is the fact that the X Phone could be among the first, if not the first, handset to come with a Tegra 4i SoC under the hood. And check out those monstrous cameras – someone clearly didn’t get the UltraPixel memo. However, the X Phone may offer users its own eye tracking technology, a feature that seems to be already confirmed for the Galaxy S4.

We’re also quite intrigued with that slim 7.9mm profile and can’t but wonder what battery life will the device have to offer. Comparatively, the Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx HD, which also comes with a 4.7-inch display, has similar dimensions (131.9 x 67.9 x 9.3 mm), but it’s slightly thicker.

As for that render above, it doesn’t exactly reveal a bezel-less handset, although we could be looking at just a placeholder image.

Other details are not available at this time, and we’ll notice that, strangely, the Android OS version is not mentioned. Previously, the X Phone was said to run a vanilla version of Android, just like Nexus devices – and yes, those rumors do say that the handset will come with Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie out of the box. Considering that Google is already removing clutter from current Motorola Android Jelly Bean upgrades, it would make plenty of sense to see Moto launch devices running Nexus-like Android versions in the future, whether the X Phone is real or not.

And what’s up with that Motorola NXT branding? Is it a play on Nexus and X Phone?

We have lots of questions that can’t be answered at this time, and we’ll remind you once again that this is an unconfirmed rumor so far. We’re certainly going to keep you posted on future X Phone rumors in the coming weeks, and we’ll certainly be interested to see whether Galaxy S4 sales will have to suffer as buyers await Google’s I/O event.

What smartphone would you rather buy this year, the Samsung Galaxy S4 or the Google / Motorola X Phone?

Thanks, Claudia!

  • Wooahh!! I knew this would happen anytime this week :D
if only the x phone has an amazing battery life I’d consider buying it over gs4
march 14 cant come any sooner!

    • Juseph

It will not have anything like amazing at 7,9 mm they could put 2000 MaH at best and that will not power fullHD and tegra (tegra is the most power hungry chip) for long

  • Proxy

    Moto X,
Thing will be way above any other android device this year.

    • wafa

      Don’t think so.

    • MasterMuffin

Not in sales but yea it’s going to be simply amazing!

  • Bone

I made this render based on the concept on the picture

    • Arnav Kalra

      looks like a sony

      • Bone

Sure I took a Z picture to photoshop.

        • Arnav Kalra

          I know that.

        • Arnav Kalra

          I know that.

      • fedor

That does NOT look like a Sony. Get real. I actually really like it. Can’t wait. Moto-haters out, please.

        • MasterMuffin

You’re trolling is so bad that I don’t think that anyone will fall for it (except for me ’cause I wrote this comment >.<)

          • fedor

            And you can’t spell. lol

          • MasterMuffin

And you just got trolled, I did it deliberately so that now your the one who got trolled. You alway’s have to make simple mistake’s when replying to trolls so that the troll’s get mad/trolled back :P

    • Haha, nice one.. It doesn’t look too bezel-less tho. :D

    • I dont like thats concept. Is really look like Sony.

      • fedor

How does that look like a Sony? Get real, googlehater.

    • Looks like the picture and it’s not beautiful.

Could be nice, maybe, if down bezel was thin like up and MOTOROLA logo smaller.

    • Abhisshack D

Another reason why Android Authority is a one of the worst Android blog , always jump the shark for more eyeballs , just a page view monger low quality blog.

  • rodpe

    Not that impressive…

    • MasterMuffin

What’s there that isn’t impressive? Amazing rear camera? The sharpest screen in mobile world? Best front camera in the world? The new Tegra 4 which has haunted benchmarks in their dreams? Yea, that doesn’t sounds impressive at all :)

      • Jaime Larios

It’s a Tegra 4i, not a Tegra 4. They are different and although the 4i is not bad, it’s also not as good as the Tegra 4.

        • MasterMuffin

          Oh I skipped the “i”

        • Ivan Myring

Actually by the standards of Tegra 4, the 4i is pretty crap. Lower clockspeed, weaker design (a9 not a15) etc.
Not flagship material, it would be less powerful than an S4 pro as its just a 4g Tegra 3

          • abate009

But it’s on 28nm process this time, which will assist it to pack more transistors than Tegra 3.
4i has 60 GPU cores compared to just 12 on Tegra 3.

4i is clocked much higher than Tegra 3’s 1.8GHz.

How can you tell it will be less powerful than S4 pro?

Did you have one product that has T4i inside?
Stop spreading BS like this.. ;)

  • I dont think that’s Motorola XPhone. I think that’s Motorola Nexus Razr. Motorola XPhone will have 5 inch display, battery 4200 mAH or 4400 mAH, also will use Qualcomm 800 with Processor 2.3 Ghz.

  • So thin, battery most likely going to be shit. I wont buy this phone if battery is anything less then 3k mah.

  • scatman

Motorola NXT = MOTO NEXT …makes sense to me Next gen googarola! Can’t wait to see!

  • MotoFan

    Now…looks like moto…??????? :-)

      more like it

      • X-User

Lol, thats far from the real thing.

  • rich_bown

Had 2 motorola androids in the past and was left hanging with promised and then reneged updates on both of them. Motorola after sales is appalling and unless Google have fixed that (and the owners forums will be an indicator of this come the end of the year) I’ll still pass on any moto hardware, no matter how enticing the specs may be.

  • Fake!

5MP front-facing camera? No way! Nobody use this, because it is useless and will consumes too much battery as a light sensor with eye scrolling features!

Motorola with 16 MP camera? They suck in camera technology! They will probably use something that is already at use in Sony, Samsung or LG.

And Motorola cares more for Battery life than thin design.

  • rk

If tegra 4i is correct then based on guidance from nvidia we won’t see this until the end of the year.

    • Ivan Myring

They wouldn’t put it in anyway, too underpowered. Its mainly designed for midrange phones not flagships.

  • Ivan Myring

    Tegra 4i? On a flagship? Cortex a9?
    No way

  • Bilal Mahmood

love moto build quality i hope they use kevlar body and the battery of the size of the razr maxx

  • yungqb7

Still buying the gs4. This LG Revolution needs to go lol

  • ConCal

If the new GS IV leaked pictures are read, then I am going to wait for the X Phone or whatever come out at I/O

  • Jon E

Phone aside I’d not go with samsung because of the crap app they insist on installing. I’ve now put a cyanogenmod on both my G2 and my wife’s G3, both work much better. So I’d go for the motorola phones

  • Plastic Sam going to have stiff competition this year!

  • Andrew Mezzi

I’m going to get the X Phone as soon as it comes to AT&T. Motorola is my favorite OEM, and I love stock Android. A 16 megapixel camera seems a little excessive, though. I’m worried about image quality.

  • Chris Smith is a fully fledged retard, the original site has already posted that this is pure fake, god AndroidAuthority will post any BS.

  • mutthu

    x phone feature is interesting
it also should come with waterproof &fingerprint security

  • Tarek Assaf

    Google Motorola X-Phone for sure.

  • Tarek Assaf

    Google Motorola X-Phone for sure.

  • I was really hoping this will be the year I will ditch samsung and get on the nexus train.
Now don’t get me wrong, aesthetics are not on the top of my priority list (I own a Samsung device mind you), but that thing looks like some 2005 shit, no way no how that’s the x-phone, or god help google.
