Google Maps 4.1

Google Maps 4.1

The Google Maps team really are speeding through things at the moment with another iteration of their mapping software. The update for Android comes with a host of news features which brings the version number up from 4.0 to 4.1. In truth, the 0.1 difference does not do the new feature list justice. It includes an updated search results page, the ability to ‘swipe’ for more results (Search ‘n Swipe), a Latitude widget and also live maps wallpaper. Perhaps the most interesting of them all is the ability to Switch Google Accounts on the application software.

The new search results page keeps things simple and does away with the tabs. Now, all the info you need is on one page and there are new buttons to see the place on the map, get directions, call it, or see it with Street View. When you make a search for a particular thing, if you want to get to more search results that fit this criteria you no longer have to go back to the list. Now all you need to do is “simply grab the page with your finger and swipe it away to the left or right to see the next or last result”. The Google Latitude widget on your home screen pretty much does just what it says on the tin. Now you can see where your closest friends are very easily in one simple widget. Add to this the ability to set your background to a live map and things start to get really funky. The final feature is the support for multiple accounts, “If you’re managing multiple identities, Maps now lets you switch the Google Account it uses between the accounts you’ve synced to your Android-powered phone.”

Head on over to the Official Google Mobile blog for more information on these excellent updates to one of my favorite applications.
