Google+ Hangouts v2 for Android features explained, to launch in the coming weeks

    Google Hangouts v2

Google+ Hangouts v2 for Android has received an important update that brings SMS/MMS support to the app among other features, although they will only be available on the Nexus 5 initially.

Google’s Randall Sarafa took to Google+ to further explain the features of Hangouts v2 (images included), adding that non-Nexus 5 Android users will get the app at some point in “the next few weeks.” However, a more precise roll out has not been offered.

That said, here’s what Sarafa had to say about some of the new features in Hangouts v2:

    • SMS/MMS (Android 4.0+): send and receive text messages in Hangouts! No more chasing conversations across apps, texts will now appear in Hangouts and you can reply right there. We also let you import all of your existing text messages into the app, send/receive group texts and even text emoji to your friends on Android, iPhone, etc.
    • Animated GIFs: view and send GIFs in your Hangout, you can even send your Auto Awesomed photos (and kitten GIFs, of course).
    • Location: you can now quickly share your location into conversations.
    • Device, in-call, mood status: share what device you’re using, whether you’re on a call, or your current mood. Status appears in conversations right alongside the “read up to here” indicator.
    • There are also some general improvements we’ve made: it’s quicker to start new conversations, you can now attach photos from other sources like Google Drive, and we added some butter to make the app faster & smoother.

We’ll also remind you that while Hangouts will be the default SMS/MMS app in Android 4.4 KitKat, users will be able to replace it with an app of their choosing if they so desire.

yeah, that was forever ago dude. I have had it installed for 5 days now. Thanks anyway

I really hate how long it takes Google to release updates… I mean, you’ve already announced it, why not just release it?

      • Philip Arnason

        Quality Assurance.

    • Brigham Cooper

so can we just wait for people to take the apk of there nexus 5′s or will that not work??

    • adam evans

Do sms and hangout stream merge ?

      • David Peterson

No. You are able to select one or the other when starting a new conversation with a contact. From there you can swipe between the threads

So is there a voice calling?

      • Hysen Parampil

not as of now. But it will come soon in the next update

    • Luka Mlinar

I don’t use it. I would probably use it if it wasn’t an extension of Google+.

      • nrs21974

Yes. Notice how google is forcing everybody to use all there services and now, everything you do on your phone will show up on youtube and google +? All these people are sending pics using hangouts and have no idea the pics are getting sent straight to google+..

        • Luka Mlinar

I got no problems with a unified Google account but turning it into a public profile, that’s a problem for me. Google + sucked when it came out, it sucks now and it will probably suck in 2-3 years time.

Google has managed to give a giant middle finger to current Nexus users. They have completely eroded the number one advantage of the Nexus line: Excellent and immediate support. My next phone may be an HTC or Motorola.

      • Jon D

I agree, Nexus used to mean first to get updates. Now it’s a slow old process.

I don’t mind as I’ve got a Nexus 5 on order. But that’s mainly because my nexus 4 is beat up.

      • James Mercer

For a start, Google own Motorola so that wouldn’t really be blow to them would it?
Second…This was all made official less than 24 hours ago and you are already whining that you haven’t got everything? I have a Nexus 4 and although i am keen to get all this stuff, I don’t see it as “a giant middle finger” because they don’t “realise it right now OMG!”

        Have some patience

        • MasterMuffin

You should have ended that with “and here’s a giant middle finger to you” :D

    • korockinout13

I’m probably just gonna grab it from the N5 factory images. Downloading now…

    • Subzer0

      nice.. runs pretty smooth.

Am I the only one who is worried about a bug that messes up where your message is sent? This is a neat idea and I will probably use hangouts as my default messaging apps but I would probably be paranoid about every message I send going to the wrong people; text messages going to a certain circle etc.

      • nrs21974

Im worried that the text are being saved on some server so some fat slob can read um and determine if Im eligible for obama care.

    • James Shaughnessy

Is any one else having issues with video calling using v2? Mine completely crashes?

      • MasterMuffin

Seems to be a problem with the leak

    • nrs21974

Somebody sent me a pic when we was texting using hangouts. I found it really aggrivating that the pic couldnt be deleted in my nexus 5. I did some research and found out that the pic was sent to my google+ account. Have no idea who saw it or if it was even private. BUT to let everybody now. DONT sync pics on your phone. They will end up on the net for anybody to see possibly. I actually decided to just delete the hangouts app cause that lil bit of intrusiveness is not cool. It seems these phones are the perfect way to gather up every bit of info about us and we have no idea just how little privacy we have when using these devices.
