The Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 first came out in 2010 armed with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, later on updated to higher and more recent versions of Gingerbread. However, Samsung announced that the tablet wouldn’t be receiving any Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades, but that another Gingerbread build with a few of Ice Cream Sandwich’s features would be provided

Although that was the case, most Galaxy Tab owners wanted to have the Ice Cream Sandwich firmware itself, not just some of its features encased in Gingerbread. Luckily, XDA developers made custom ROMs for ICS-deprived devices and constantly fixed bugs and problems with every build.  The AOKP (Android Open Kang Project) custom ROM is one of the most preferred by users.  This time, XDA member, hendryedwardrose, released the latest build of an AOKP custom ROM based on Android 4.0.4 for the Galaxy Tab.

This ROM packs a stock Android experience with smooth and fast performance together with an inbuilt ROM Control Mod that allows for further customization. Do note that this ROM is still undergoing constant development, so it may still carry several bugs and issues. If you want to try this custom ROM because you are itching to have ICS on your tablet, you can do so just by following the requirements and instructions below.

Warning

Requirements

  • A rooted Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 with ClockworkMod Recovery installed.
  • A Windows PC
  • Samsung KIES installed in your PC to have it automatically install the needed Samsung USB drivers.
  • 7-Zip, WinRAR, or any other program that can extract archive files.
  • Download the following files to your computer:
  • See to it that your tablet’s battery is at least 75% charged to avoid interruption of the process due to insufficient battery power .
  • Backup all personal data on your phone to make sure you have a copy of your personal data (e.g., contacts, SMS, MMS, Internet settings, Wi-Fi passwords, and the like) in case the procedure in this guide erases such data.

Instructions

  1. Copy the AOKP ROM Build 40 package and the GApps (Google Apps) package to the root of the tablet’s internal SD card.
  2. Switch off your tablet and reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery. To do this, hold the Volume Up key and Power button together until the screen turns on, then you can release the buttons.
  3. Select Wipe Data/Factory Reset, then choose Yes on the next screen.
  4. Select Wipe Cache Partition and confirm the action on the next screen.
  5. Go back to the main menu and select Advanced. From there, select Wipe Dalvik Cache and confirm the action on the next screen.
  6. Select Install ZIP From SD Card. Select Choose ZIP From SD Card and locate the aokp_p1_build-40.zip file. Confirm the action on the next screen to flash the ROM.
  7. Go back to the main menu and install the GApps package in the same manner as in step 6. This will install apps like the Play Store, Gmail, etc.
  8. When the installation is completely done, go back to the main menu then select Reboot System Now. This will reboot your tablet to the installed AOKP ROM. Booting for the first time may take up to 5 minutes.

Awesome! You’ve now successfully installed the Android 4.0.4 ICS-based AOKP ROM Build 38 on your Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000. Have fun with all the features Ice Cream Sandwich can give you and your tab.

I think a Cube U9GT 2 Android tablet is much better than a Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000. The price of Cube U9GT 2 is USD 229.99 in this site: http://www.mcbub.com/item/142428/

    • knoblet

The galaxy tab is over 18 months old. People looking to update it aren’t usually looking for a new tablet.

For those that are; there are dozens of “better” (read:newer) tablets out there so spamming here probably won’t get you anywhere.

    ROM Link is dead

Build 40 is now available for GT-P1000:

Hi there, I seem to get an error when I update from SD Card. Something about the signature not being verified. Any ideas?

    • http://www.facebook.com/probstc Carlos Probst

Same here, and I downloaded the files twice. I think it might have to do with not having access to the Advanced feature and being able to Wipe Dalvik Cashe.

  • Rambo

Hey Carl! Thanks for the guide.

However, I can’t complete step 5 because my tablet don’t have the Advanced option. Do you have any idea why? Do you think it’s because it’s carrier locked?

    • Rambo

Btw, I rooted my tablet using z4root Method, which is also in your site.

      • Zulhilmi Latif

        is it running ?

    • http://www.facebook.com/probstc Carlos Probst

I have the same issue and I believe this is what is keeping me from completing the upgrade.

Same problem here, no Advanced option. My tablet is not carrier locked. Any idea? It is annoying that I always end up with a factory reset Galaxy.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=604439413 Istvan Kiss

Maybe it is related to the fact that in Recovery mode I get error
        Verifying update package
E:failed to seek in /cache/update.zip (Invalid Argument)
        E:signature verification failed

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=604439413 Istvan Kiss

          Solved!

On my Galaxy Tab I had Froyo. It turned out that the verification error is a feature of the recovery version (see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1052991). Although I tried a couple of workaround mentioned on this page, almost with disastreous reason, but finally I simply updated the tab to GingerBread first (see this excellent video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtWdNqwAETs), then I could follow the above instructions with only minor hickups.
Tablet OS is upgraded, everthing seems to be running, I am happy. Thanks for the great job!

          • Rofik

My OS is upgraded through that method. But can you open the APN setting?,, bcoz I can’t.

            Hi,
are there any issues/bugs that you have encountered while using the ICS on your tab. want to be sure before i upgrade mine.
            Thanx in advance

          • helper

rotation was kinda glitchy, you cant setup apn and some features doesnt work.

  • Ross Uren

Awesome, thank you so much for bringing my SGT out of the dark ages :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/probstc Carlos Probst

Two issues keeping me from installing ICS on my tablet:
    1) In step 5, I do not have the Advanced menu option, thus I cannot Wipe the Dalvik Cache. I rooted my device using the DooMLoRD’s Easy Rooting Toolkit 4.0.
    2) When I try to install the aokp_p1_build-40.zip file, I get a message that I cannot access a certain folder and then another that files signature cannot be verified. I thought if you root your device you should have access to all folders?
Perhaps this is a sign that I have gone too far already and it is best to stop before I cause serious harm to my device…

Kies went dead after upgrade, can’t connect, any ideas? I already tried reboot, both PC and Tab, reinstall drivers, some more reboot, no luck.

This used to work for me to connect to Kies but the option is not available in ICS

I am so disapointed with Samsung’s decision not to provide an upgrade for our phone a tecnician this morning had the odasity to blame google for that.
Anyhow, I am concerned that when I root my phone I will not able to gain access to many products on the Market. I had rooted my Asus transformer in the past and had experienced this problem. Can anyone confirm if they have had any issues installing from the market after installing the AOKP upgrade.
    Thanks

    • http://www.facebook.com/ndirangu.360 Edward Ndirangu

Mr. Mohannad you spoke exactly for me – very disappointed by Samsung. Kies for instance is so poorly done (I can’t believe it’s from Samsung), compared to say Nokia/Ovi Suite. Did you or anyone find out if a rooted GT-P1000 can install from the Market (Google Play)? Am surprised no one found this question important. It’s critical to me! Pls.

I have followed the steps in the post and now have Android version 4.0.4 on my GT-P1000 but my USB connection to the computer does not work. After reading a bit after googling, I tried going to Settings -> Storage, but I don’t see the three dot menu on the top right corner that everyone is talking about to go to change some settings.

I am about to embark on app development on the Android platform and I am hoping a fellow Androidian will help be get past this problem. With the USB not working I am really stuck as I can’t debug. Let alone debug, I can’t even get my apk files on the tablet.
