Pre-order numbers for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge have taken Samsung by surprise. According to Koh Dong-jin, the president of Samsung’s mobile division, S7 pre-orders have been stronger than expected, although no sales figures or targets were disclosed during a press briefing on the new models.

Samsung hopes the strong numbers will help bolster sales in China, which have been lagging recently as the iPhone gains popularity in the region and competition increases from the likes of HUAWEI, Xiaomi and others. Previous rumors had claimed Galaxy S7 pre-order figures were lower than they had been last year for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

Without actual figures, we can’t say if Samsung has lowered its targets and the pre-order numbers are in fact lower than those for the S6 and S6 Edge, or if the new Galaxies have sparked new interest in Samsung’s flagship line. Considering the overwhelmingly positive reviews for the Galaxy S7 Edge in particular, if these phones can’t turn things around, nothing can.
