Galaxy S4, Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update tipped for late January by French carrier SFR

While Samsung is yet to properly announce Android 4.4 KitKat update plans for its current line of flagship devices – and not only flagship models, since KitKat has been optimized to work on mid-range as well – it appears that SFR France is ready to offer KitKat-related news to its subscribers that own high-end 2013 Galaxy handsets.

On its smartphones blog, the company posted a short message saying that the Android 4.4 update should be available next year to SFR Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 buyers sometime between late January and early February.

Actual release dates for the update aren’t provided, and we’ll remind you that just recently the same carrier announced a KitKat update delay for the LG G2 (that update is reportedly arriving next year not sooner). Even so, mobile operators should still have more details about upcoming major Android for some of their most popular devices.

Assuming that the KitKat update does roll out in late January in France, we should see other international carriers release the update for their own Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 versions around the same time.

In the meantime, several Samsung devices are receiving their Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update, so better enjoy that one while you wait for KitKat to arrive. We’ll also note that the Galaxy S4 Google Play edition is already running the latest KitKat version available – Android 4.4.2.

Wow. Remind me to never get a Samsung phone. They have always been late with updates.

I disagree. Yesterday the HTC One mini International and the HTC One Verizon got Android 4.3. This is getting 4.4 by the end of January. That’s pretty legit. However, if you want fast updates, just get a Nexus or Google Edition.

        • iamtravis182

That’s the primary reason I went for a Nexus 5 this go around.

Motorola is upping their game in the update department. I think they made the smart decision to bypass 4.3 altogether and just update to 4.4.

It takes time for Samsung to add all their Samsung Touchwiz crap, then carriers needs to add all their bloatware.

        • iamtravis182

          Ugh. Touch Wiz.

I used to be on Verizon, and every time I went to use the Turn by Turn navigation app, I had to specify that I wanted to used Google’s app instead of “VZ Navigator” on my Droid Incredible 2. That along with the “Blockbuster App”, and “NFL Mobile” were enough to make make me want to puke.

Then why does the S4 GPE already have Android 4.4.2? Not all Samsung phones are late,

        • iamtravis182

Eh, I think GPE are exempted from the conversation.

    • Seriously?

So much bias here… G2 is slated to get kit kat update as late as March in some areas, and people act like that’s great!

Lol by the time my gs4 gets the update it will be obsolete so dumb

      • Maher Salti

        obsolete? explain yourself..

        • Chris

They will already have 4.5 or 5.0 or whatever they call it…it will be built and running on google edition phones by then

Dont be so irrigant your argument doesnt make sense. As long as people have the phone they can root and custom roms. Essentially s4 already have kitkat cm11. My old kindle fire first gen already has cm11 that shit is like 3 years old now.

I have the Nexus 7 for stock android and for quick updates. My Galaxy S4 is my phone of choice for now, and for me, the 4.3 update removed what little lag I had. Seeing how much the ram usage on my Nexus 7 dropped after updating to KitKat, I think it will make the S4 an even better phone.

Hey. Thanks for your answer. You made my day. In some time I’m going to join android users, chaing my ipad mini for a nexus 7 and a samsung galaxy s4, thanks a lot.

Verizon Wireless is probably gonna be a d–k about it and release Kitkat super later than others. Please don’t Big Red, a holes. -_-

    • felix diaz

Guys, is 4.4 for s4 has been released? Im based in the UK

    • A.M

LAME cause my S2 is running Kit-kat 4.4.2 ROM

I’m new to Samsung coming from an iPhone. Already missing some of the features like being able to print from my phone via wireless printer and being able to select and delete text before forwarding an email. I can’t do that on this new S4.
What is a Kit kat 4.4.2. This article stated if you have an Galaxy S4 Google Play phone, which I have, that I would already have KK4.4.2. I checked my OS update and it’s a 4.3. Is there something I have to do to update?
