We have seen numerous Jelly Bean-based custom ROMs for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-T999, a clear sign that the developer community has always been sensitive enough to address Android users' need for variety when it comes to custom ROMs. To add to that list is another custom ROM, this time, an AOKP ROM.

If you have been around Android communities for quite some time now, you've probably seen a number of custom ROMs — AOKP, CM10, and MIUI, to mention a few. Doing a bit of research can help you distinguish one ROM from another as each has its own distinct features and tricks up its sleeve. The number of custom ROMs grow each day and picking one out of the bunch will surely be a difficult feat to accomplish.  Trying out ROMs will probably help you decide which one to stick to for daily use.

Lately, a new AOKP-based ROM called AOKP JellyBean + Butter has been released for the T-Mobile Galaxy S3.  Compiled by Team Kang and  XDA Developers member Whitehawkx, this AOKP ROM brings Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean to the T-Mobile handset.  The latest ROM build includes kernel updates, fixes to framework and MMS issues, and a “Kill All” option for the Recent Apps switcher.

As is always the case with custom ROMs, some bugs may still be lurking around, although the developers are continuously squashing them and improving the ROM.

In this guide, learn how to upgrade the Galaxy S3 T999 to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean via AOKP JellyBean + Butter custom ROM.

Hey Carl, I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 (SGH-T999V) from WIND mobile. Apparently, it is compatible with T-mobile roms. Do you know if this is true and your method works for my phone? Also, does this ROM affect the phone’s modem?

    • Skylar Rachky

I also have the s3 with wind. In addition to Georges question do I need to be rooted to do this?

      • George C

Confirmed working on SGH-T999V model of Galaxy S3 from Wind Mobile. I bit the bullet and went ahead with the install. Once installed, I experienced an error along the lines of “exchange failed to load” or “exchange failed to activate,” but this only happens for the first few minutes after the phone reboots. Jellybean and phone are working flawlessly other than a few glitches and an occasional crash (happens during the exchange error during reboot). I can’t say for sure whether you need root, but I rooted my phone before I installed ClockWorkMod (which Carl linked to on this page.) I should mention that I used Odin 3.07, not 3.04 as the other post says. The steps I took were:

        1) Root phone
        2) Install CWM
        3) Followed instructions on this post

This Rom isn’t perfect, and it has its glitches and crashes, so be warned. The issues don’t occur too frequently on my phone, and Jellybean’s features make it worth it.

Is it really smoother than ics or its not noticeable?

            Slightly
            ..

I can’t really tell any difference. Almost 2 weeks in and no regrets. The UI is better, the added features are awesome the glitches almost never happen now, etc. Current glitches occur after closing high quality games. Basically, the screen flickers for a second or two, and comes back to normal. Normal otherwise.

I installed the ROM in pretty much the same manner as George C. Mine went flawlessly, and the whole thing seems remarkably stable. I am actually not experiencing the errors that George C described at all. The one thing I have noticed is that the external SD card takes a bit of time to mount and be recognized by the system, and that after I installed last night, I had to reboot in order for the card to even be seen by the phone, as apparently the phone lost it overnight. If that’s all I need to concern myself over, I have to say, the Jelly Bean experience is so much deeper and more customizable on this phone than the stock ROM. I love the customizable lock screen, especially.

The longest part of the process is downloading and re-installing all your apps – but that goes for any ROM. It’s only been a day, but I think I’ll stick with this ROM for awhile.

I have installed on my S3 and like what they have done and like the smoothness and bloatware removed and the phone does not run as much memory but found a couple issues:
    What can be improved:
    * screen with flicker for about 5 to 10 secs at any given time. I think its when 7 or more apss are running
    * when the screen times out and you press the home button, the previous app used is minimize a a pain to hold the home button to go back in.
    * seems like the rom calender does not sync up, purchase a calendar off play store and seem to work fine.. ACS default calendar and email seems more stable.
    * not sure what “swagga baby” pink hat icon in the task window means or does
    * do not like the color or functionality of the contacts in this rom… purchase contacts from play store
    * keyboard could use some cooler features like SlideIt or GO Keyboard.
    * TIME/DATE alarm could be a little sleeker and functional like ACS but works
    * ability to change notification ringtone on incoming messenger for individual contacts. (If you have text on and phone off, and you can differiate between who is texting)
    * when power off the phone, selection to just turn off data… good for those apps that like to go out to the internet while you play a game or use.
    What works well:
    * tether high speed connects and works great
    * memory seems to be better manageable
    * Voice search is better than ACS but still a glitch
    * seems nice and lean ROM

  • Jordan Robinson

DId anyone notice any longer battery life with this?

  • Mo

The battery life on this custom rom is so bad. I only get 5 hours in standby and 3 if screen is on. Is there any useful tips on how to conserve battery life on here?
