This is the Galaxy S3 Mini: specs and press image revealed [Updated with photo]

by: Bogdan PetrovanOctober 10, 2012

This morning, we reported that Samsung Mobile’s CEO himself, Mr. JK Shin, has announced the arrival of the newest member of the Galaxy family – the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini.

The 4-inch phone will be officially revealed tomorrow, October 11, but we can provide you with the Galaxy S3 Mini’s specs and features right now, courtesy of the German tech blog Mobile Geeks.

The little brother of the Galaxy S3 will feature a 4-inch AMOLED display with WVGA resolution (800 x 480). On the inside, the Galaxy S3 Mini GT-I8190 will be powered by a dual-core STE U8420 chip presumably clocked at 1GHz. The phone will also feature the standard (these days) 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD with up to 32GB.

The Galaxy S3 Mini features a 5MP rear camera, with autofocus and LED flash, and a front facing VGA camera. The battery will supposedly be a 1500mAh model.

The folks at Mobile Geeks claim that the information above, while not official, is highly reliable and verified from several sources.

In terms of connectivity, the S3 Mini will support HSPA 14.4/5.76 900/1900/2100 and EDGE / GPRS 850/900/1800/1900. The device will also feature Bluetooth 4, WiFi a/b/g/n, DLNA, and NFC.

Here’s a comparison between the S3 Mini and its older sibling:

You can see that the Galaxy S3 Mini closely resembles the S3, but it does have several distinctive features. The corners of the devices are more rounded, the home button is slightly redesigned. And, unless the leaked press image is mirrored, it seems that the front camera and the proximity sensor have been relocated on the left side of the device.

In terms of software, the Galaxy S3 Mini will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box.

We expect Samsung to officially launch the Galaxy S3 Mini tomorrow. At that point, we will be able to provide official information on the price and availability of the device. The device will supposedly cost around €360 in Germany and Switzerland, and slightly more (€420) in the Scandinavian countries. No info on the price of the Galaxy S3 Mini in other markets, but we’ll keep an eye open.

[Update] came up with what appears to be the first photo of the Galaxy S3 Mini in the wild.

  • This looks like a Galaxy Ace 2/Advance put in a new coat with Android 4.1.1

  • It’s a shame they didn’t take the chance to make the same device just with a smaller screen. That would be great for people who don’t buy the S3 just for it’s enormous size.

    • I agree. A 4″ screen with 1280×720 resolution would definitely beat the iPhone 5. :-)

  • TheMeow

What difference with the galaxy S plus ? dual core 1ghz against mono core1.4ghz ! With the exynos quad core it would have been “The Iphone killer”. Mr Samsung you are so badly adviced !…..

  • TNM

this is barely better then the original SGS1, and worse then a SGS2?! What are they thinking…squeeze the customer for sure.

    • DAngelo8

The difference is LTE and size. I’ve been waiting for such a device at this size and will definitely pick one up upon release.

      • John Pintogrande

Well I guess everyone figured out the way samsung tries to beat apple specs… they can only beat iphone 5 specs on a phone 60% bigger and heavier… and you fools all buy it… “OMG the screen is so big!!!!” Yes it is big and doesn’t fit in one hand and is only there to fool you in buying a plastic phone, the size of a macbook air, with the specs of an Iphone 5

  • And still no word about jelly bean for most existing S3s. Fucking ridiculous

    • Rex

Your anger is justified, good sir. Samsung, listen to this man! There are millions more waiting.

    • Pick your custom Jelly Bean ROM here:

    • Mav6

Yea i agree to a point they need to speed up that process, but it look like they are coming soon.

    • I’m running official jellybean on my s3, its not that big a difference, just google now and a different notification bar are the only main differences. project butter may make it smoother transitions but its not like there was lag to begin with so its barely noticable.

  • Ahmed Hassan

why would someone buy this when samsung galaxy s advance is the exact same thing? I think the processor will be more powerful and camera will be 8 MP.

  • “Are you interested in the Galaxy S3 Mini?”

With 800×480. No. I will never buy anything that is not 16:9.

  • tomn1ce

They should’ve made the display 4″ 720p , and put in a bigger battery at least a 2000mAh with a exynos 4212 processor clocked at 1.2GHz and the micro sd card expandable up to 64GB…if they really want to call it the GS3 mini

  • Abir

blown away by the price tag, with the samsung brand name established they can now milk the customers with 2010 specd devices.

  • Timmy

    iPad Mini, GS3 Mini…coincidence?

    • Xeltos

Yes but I bet iPad 3 will come with a Killer screen and a mighty A5x / A6 processor. That’s doing justice to Mini title.

This is just a similar looking device which share nothing with the phone its supposed to be the mini version of. You can get a Galaxy nexus for less price than this. Which is a more powerful and comes with larger screen. So what is the point of this?

  • saurabhaj

Samsung should not bring such entry level device with SIII name.
ITS not Highend device as previously reported,
but an upgrade to Galaxy mini,
    see tomorrow,
this mobile will not have SIII Mini name on it,
might be called Samsung Galaxy S 3 mini

  • Dumb… 1 gb ram 1ghz…wtf

  • EKfine

Wow this is fucking stupid samsung! Really? That specs and you call it sgs3!?

  • Luca

    Just a SGS 1 with a little more RAM… How dissapointing… S+(i9001) is much better…

  • Ay

thanks a lot for these comments. I hesitated to buy an s3 or this s3 mini. And now that’s an obvious answer in my mind.

  • Nadgob Navortep

I like Galaxy S3. But I don’t like that AllShare doesn’t support a lot of files format.
I have found another apploication that works much better for DLNA – It is ArkMC.
