Galaxy S3 Mini and Galaxy S2 Plus scheduled to hit stores in late 2012?

by: Chris SmithAugust 20, 2012

Samsung has just released two high-end new Android devices, the Galaxy S3 smartphone and the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet, and it’s getting ready to unveil the Galaxy Note 2 at IFA 2012. But the company is also working on other devices rumored to be launched this year, and we have details on two interestingly-named ones, the Galaxy S3 Mini and the Galaxy S2 Plus.

Sam Mobile reports that these two devices are scheduled to hit in late 2012, but we’re not shown any proof that would document their existence.

Furthermore, the publication suggests that the Galaxy S3 Mini would cost around 250 Euro while the Galaxy S2 Plus will be priced around 300-400 Euro, which is definitely curious. Would Samsung release such devices? Would a device that’s basically an improved 2011 Galaxy S2 cost more than a Mini version of this year’s hottest Android handset in town. That’s hardly conceivable, but we’ll go along with the rumor for now because it’s not unimaginable to see Samsung release at least one more Android handset that will take on directly the iPhone 4S – the current Apple flagship handset will most likely be discounted by $100 once the iPhone 5/6 hits stores in September.

In fact, the publication says that the Galaxy S3 Mini is expected to compete against the iPhone 4S and it will feature a 5-megapixel camera, dual-core processor and 4-inch Super AMOLED screen with WVGA resolution.

Details for the Galaxy S2 Plus were not available in the initial article, but then Sam Mobile quickly posted, then pulled an article entitled “This is the Galaxy S II Plus” based on information retrieved from a Spanish site called VTR.

While we have no idea why the post got deleted so fast, it does mention rumored specs and features for the handset and provides images of this so-called Galaxy S2 Plus(above) – we will note that this isn’t the first time we’ve heard of the Galaxy S2 Plus rumor, with Samsung having previously been said to launch such a device ahead of the Galaxy S3. We’ll be waiting for more details on either model, in case they’re real, but in the mean time here are the briefly-rumored specs and features for the Galaxy S2, as they appeared in that article:

  • Android: Android 4.0
  • Screen: 4.5” AMOLED screen
  • Processor: 1.5 Dual-core
  • Camera: 8 Megapixel
  • RAM: 1 GB
  • Storage: 16GB
  • Micro SD: Yes

From the looks of it, and again, assuming these are believable details, the Galaxy S2 Plus seems to be a bit higher-end than the Galaxy S3 Mini. Would Samsung pull such a move? Or is it possible that the Galaxy S3 Mini and the Galaxy S2 Plus are actually the same phone? We’re going to stop speculating on baseless rumors for now, but let’s hear more from you guys! Anyone excited about these mid-ranged devices reportedly set to hit stores in time for Christmas?

A smaller version of this year’s hottest android phone makes sense, since the only thing keeping a number of iPhone users from switching over is that “android phones are too big.” Problem solved. Long live android

      live long and prosper :D

The S2 Plus looks an awful lot like the T-Mobile Galaxy S II/Galaxy S II X used by Telus/SGH-T989D, at least spec sheet wise from that snippet.

  • Anonymau5

I would love a smaller version of the S3. Size and price are the only things stopping me from buying one right now. I just prefer 4-inch screens.

    • MasterMuffin

I personally like the 4,8″ screen in sgs3, but it has it’s downsides, so a phone with same (or better specs) and about 4″ (I would prefer little over) screen would be really good and it would be a good competitor against iphone 5 which will probably have about 4″ screen…

      • Sondre Krumsvik

The next iPhone will probably have a 3.6-3.7 inch display. It will have better specs and change EVERYTHING AGAIN AND AGAIN! It will be a masterpiece which is completely original and not a copy of Sony and Samsung smartphones.
Let me know if you did not see the sarcasm.

        • MasterMuffin

:D yea I got your sarcasm before you wrote that it was sarcasm :) apple products just are the best there is…

        • The new iPhone comes with a 4″ display. Anyway, I like the 4.8″ of the S3 and will never buy anything smaller than this.

  • Samsung should just lower the price of the SII, give it proper support (update both Android and TW) and let it compete naturally with the 4S as the SIII is supposed to compete with the next iPhone. What they should be working on is a decent competitor to the 3GS. Make something small, just little bit less powerful than the SII (like the NovaThor chipset), 768MB RAM minimum, etc.

      Galaxy s advance…

      • But that phone doesn’t even have ICS and we’re now waiting for the next one after JB. Samsung and all other Android manufacturers need to simplify their line-up and release phones that can actually be updated to the latest version of Android for the next two years after release. For all the flack that Samsung is getting for allegedly copying Apple, providing the latest update albeit gimped to a three year old phone still sounds a lot better than not updating their phone at all.

Would be nice to have something smaller. All these screen sizes and resolution war is really weary, sooner or later consumer will be sick of it. What ever happened to simplicity? The good thing about Apple is that it does not go over board with its mobile devices when they improved them. Maybe that is why Apple slowly and carefully optimize its mobile gadgets and not just dump anything functions available on the market onto mobile devices like Samsung. Because if you do that it just shows that that company is weak and want to make it looks like it is catching up or equalizing the market share but they are not, in reality.

  • If samsung does this it would be a bad move…to release a mini version of the SGS3 would sort of decrease the SGS3’s worth. Which is why I love my note <3 cant have another smartphone like it….unless its a predecessor from the same brand :p

I'm not to sure about the SGS2 Plus being a good idea or not though,

  • Anjaneya

any idea when s2 plus will be releasing?
