Samsung rolls out Ice Cream Sandwich updates on a weekly or monthly basis. With Jelly Bean just around the corner, some Samsung devices are already getting their last treats of Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich before welcoming the new Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update. It seems that the Korean manufacturer is pushing U.S. carriers to get the Jelly Bean update for its flagship device, the Galaxy S3, as soon as possible.

In the past few weeks, numerous Jelly Bean update leaks began surfacing for the T-Mobile Galaxy S3, as well as its international variant. Just recently, the Canadian Bell Galaxy S3 SGH-I747M has been added to the list of lucky devices with leaked Jelly Bean updates.

If you are one of the many users who just can't wait for the official update to hit your phone, then you can always take a sneak peek by manually installing the leaked Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean firmware VLALI update.

This guide shows you how to upgrade the Galaxy S3 I747M to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean build VLALI (leaked firmware).

Warning

Requirements

  • Bell Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-I747M running stock, non-rooted Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich build VLALH1 with stock Android recovery (not custom recovery)
  • leaked Android 4.1.1 build VLALI OTA update for Bell Galaxy S3 (SGH-I747M_I747MVLALI-OTA-I747MVLALH_BMC_322447427.zip, 307.5 MB)
  • Fully charged battery or at least 70% battery left.
  • A Windows PC
  • Handset USB drivers installed on the PC. You may install the drivers by installing Samsung Kies.
  • Enable USB debugging on your handset.
  • Disable antivirus, firewall, and other security software. Also disable Samsung Kies and other software that accesses your phone. Such software can interfere with the procedure in this guide.
  • Any extracting software such as winzip or 7zip installed on your computer.
  • Backup all personal data on your phone to make sure you have a copy of your personal data (e.g., contacts, SMS, MMS, Internet settings, Wi-Fi passwords, and the like) in case the procedure in this guide erases such data.

Instructions

  1. Copy the update package ZIP file to your phone's internal storage (/sdcard).
  2. Shut down the phone completely.
  3. Reboot the phone into stock Android recovery by holding down the Volume Up, Home, and Power buttons until the Samsung logo flashes.  When it does, release the Power button.  The recovery menu should appear.
  4. Using the Volume buttons, highlight Apply update from SD card (or, if that menu item is unavailable, highlight Apply update from internal storage).  Tap the Power button to select it.
  5. On the next screen, select the update package ZIP file that you copied to your phone's internal storage.  Press the Power button to select it and begin upgrading.
  6. The upgrading process takes some time, usually around 4 to 8 minutes.  Your phone will reboot when upgrading is complete.
  7. If the phone does not reboot automatically, select Reboot system now from the recovery menu.

Congratulations! You have successfully installed the leaked Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean build VLALI on your Samsung Galaxy S3 SGH-I747M.

I was just about to find out :)

I’m having this error “e:error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip (status 6), on a Rogers I747MVLALH1 (supposedly same as Bell ICS 4.04). Gone via external SD route, any ideas. Thanks.

    • Vic Singh

I have the same issue with Bell
I tried external memory SD and same thing.

I dont have the option for internal SD

      • gleon

I have the same error and issue with Bell also.
        This does not work.
Either the file itself or the update process is incorrect it seems

Same problem. Anyone find a fix?

  • Vic

Hey can I use mobile Odin to install this?

  • wretched026

I’m getting the same error to

  • gleon

Can anyone confirm that by installing this, I will no longer be able to get future official OTA updates?
    Thanks

    • jimbob

No you might have to revert to the old version first. Or if we’re lucky, someone will make an update for us so that we get back on the OTA track ;)

      • gleon

Excellent. Thanks :) That’s what I understood. I want JB bad – new to the G3 from Iphone and I want to show it off to the thus far unconverted lol. I love JB on my N7, but functionality is reduced with wifi only. Want to play with Google Now now!

  • Hadly

I’m only getting the option to update from EXTERNAL storage, not INTERNAL storage. Anyone else have that issue?

  • Landon

I too don’t have an option for INTERNAL storage. How can we install it without an SD card?

    Hi Alvin:

This is a great article. I have the mentioned phone with the fol specs:

    Android Version 4.0.4
    Model Number SGH-1747M
Carrier: Virgin Mobile (Canada) running on Bell Canada Network
    Baseband Version 1747MVLLHI
    Build Number IMM76D.I747MVLALHI

I have followed the instructions you provided and placed the zip file directly on my SD card within the phone. Only difference is my recovery console only has ‘external SD’ and not ‘Internal SD’ for the option to load the update package from. When I attempt to load the file from the recovery console(everything is stock on the phone, I have not rooted the phone in any manner) I get an error that reads “error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip (status 6)”.

Is the actual zip file supposed to be saved to the internal SD card or are the files supposed to be extracted to a folder named SGH-I747M_I747MVLALI-OTA-I747MVLALH_BMC_322447427on the SD card for the upgrade to work properly?

I am new to this so I want to make sure I am doing this correctly. If you coudl advise I would appreciate it.

Or is my phone not applicable because it is a Virgin Mobile Canada phone and NOT a pure Bell phone?

Thanks for you assistance, I greatly appreciate it. Have a great day!

  • Curtis
