Thanks a bunch! Worked like a charm.
I had to take out the MicroSD chip and put it into a carrying tray and put it into the card slot. I had installed the drivers and the phone shows up in Kies.
Other than that, exactly as written in your guide.

How to add Arabic language to Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-T989?
I bought two of it from Canada and they have no Arabic language!

    • Abdullah

That’s right I also need the arabic language on the phone is there any way you can install Arabic on the Galaxy S2?

  • mike

It rooted my phone. Unfortunately, Busybox Installer wont install on a rooted T989 w/ICS. You cannot use Titanium Backup w/o Busybox. Having Superuser doesnt tell u a thing about removing bloatware anyway

    • MikeyB

Busybox works fine on my T989 w/ICS. It installed when I was in Secure Settings … it asked if I wanted Busybox installed. It installed without a hitch. Been working great ever since, and that’s after I’ve reflashed a few more times. lol.

  • Hassan

So there is no way to add Arabic language yet?

  • Austin

Will this work with the Telus version of the Samsung Galaxy S2 ‘X’. My Model Number is SGH-T989D? Thanks in advance. If any more info is needed such as baseband version please let me know. :-)

    • darcyrheault

yes it will. just finished and all looks good.

  • Tejas

will this work on android 4.0.3 on my Samsung galaxy s ii t989? and how would you unroot it?

  • http://www.facebook.com/huguinho.telles Huguinho Telles

This version comes with the language Brazilian Portuguese PT-BR? can help someone you know by this language?

  • Andrew

To reboot the phone into recovery mode, you gotta hold the Vol +, Vol -, and power button until the Samsung logo comes up, as soon as you see that, let go and then mash all 3 buttons together again before the Samsung logo disappears. Had to look up the phone’s WIKI on that.
Other than that, just got done rooting a Tmob Galaxy S2 that has recently been flashed to AOS 4.0.3 through Kies.
Install Superuser and Busybox from the market before rooting, saves you a few steps (do not move to external SD since its recommended to unmount SD before rooting)

  • The HitecRednec

Steps 12 and 13 not accurate since the Android System recovery as installed by the ClockworkMod Recovery does not offer the “Install ZIP From SD Card” as specified. It actually says:
    Android system recovery
    Volume up/down to move highlight:
    power button to select.
    reboot system now
    apply update from external storage
    wipe data/factory reset
    wipe cache partition
    apply update from cache
i did selection 2 (apply update from external storage)
navigated to the SD card file where the root.zip file was and it said:
    – Install /sdcard …
    Finding update package…
    Opening update package…
    Verifying update package…
    E:signature verification. failed
    Conclusion Guide INACCURATE!!!

If that’s the menu you got, you did the steps wrong. The process and description is accurate

Having issues rooting my Samsung Galaxy S II (SGH-T989)

    Android Version: 4.0.3
    Baseband Version: T989UVLE1
    Build Number: IML74K.UVLE1

I’ve followed the instructions here twice, and everything appears to work as stated. However when I run apps like Titanium Backup or BusyBox, I receive error messages that my phone may not be rooted. When I open ConnectBot I get a $ symbol indicating the phone isn’t rooted. I can open Superuser, but it shows no info/options/etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • http://twitter.com/CVFutrell Christopher Futrell

Don’t know if it matters, but Odin says “Epic 4G” at the heading.

      • Ejay

I am also having the same issue. I went through the steps and had no errors, but I don’t have root access

  • Luisgalaxy

works!! works!! it took me some time to figure out how to get into downloading mode but after that it was fast; less than five minutes.

  • Giorgio Federighi

    can you use a mac?

  • Kadeo666

This was my first try at rooting and it was a complete success. I followed the instructions and everything worked exactly as it said it would. Anyone who claims there are mistakes in your method are wrong because I repeated the process on a friends phone with the exact same result. SUCCESS

  • TheCareFreeDude

When my phone is in download mode and I try to load recovery-cmw-hercules.tar it says:
    Added!!
    Odin v.3 engine (ID:12)..
    File analysis..
    SetupConnection..
    Can’t open the serial(COM) port.
All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
    Any help?

  • Macron

works like a charm…. you people do as said and you will be fine… also install titanium backup (pro version) and avast mobile for your full protection.

  • Jim__R

Does this increment the flash counter (thus making future warranty repairs problematic)?

  • Akil Ammons
